Does anyone know what RPM my new Johnson 4 stroke 60hp should be idleing at? It seems to idle somewhat high. One of the reasons I purchaced this motor is I was told it would troll slower than my two stroke.

Right now when warmed up, it idles at around 750 RPM. I asked a mechanic and he told me that was normal. The dealer originaly told me 600 RPM was where it was supposed to run.

Should I take it in and have them turn it down? I think it may be computer regulated.

Thanks.... Kevin M

Re: 2004 Johnson Four Stroke Idle Speed

Hi, Kevin.

The Service Manual says 700rpm +/- 50rpm.

To me that means 650rpm would be within spec., but so would 750rpm.

Another thought. After you crank her up, does she drop the idle speed after about 30 seconds? That is when the cold idle enrichment turns off.

My DF70 idles at 700rpm, in or out of gear. It trolls my Boston Whaler 17 very well except for walleye. I just turn the engine off and drift or use my electric in that case.

Good luck. :)
