we have a 2004 mercruiser 350 serial #om689893. it has a ticking noise on the left side(looking at engine from inside the boat), that sounds a lot like a valve. but, you cannot hear it when you rev the engine up to about 1/3 throttle, it is heard both in the water and with muffs on. we have the valve cover off along with the exhaust that had to come off to get to the valve cover, we were thinking about checking the water shutter first. can you tell by looking at it if it is bad? my husband is a mechanic, but mostly ford, can you give us some instructions on adjusting the valves with the engine not running? thanks in advance.

NO dont torque them down.you have to set the cylinder on compression stroke and adjust to zero lash plus 3/4 turn.

st carefully follow the procedure in the manual! too lose and you'll hammer the crap out of the valve train and wind up breaking something, too tight and you'll keep em from closing, run like crap and if way too tight cause immediate and severe problems...

Hyd valve trains don`t usually need adjusting because of noise unless something else broke. The static adjustment i use is : set the cylinder on it`s compression stroke(both valves closed), adjust rocker nut untill you can`t spin the pushrod with your fingers and then go 3/4 turn more. A flapper/ water shutter if worn will give a ticking sound ,but not rythmic like the valve train but it will be heard in the exaust Y pipe area.

How manny hours are on the engine? More then likely being a 04 the valves do not need aujusting. More then likely it will be the exhaust shutters, They are like A metel plate with rubber wraped around it that is right at the top of the Y collector for each exhaust manifold Just under the last rubber hose on the [Y] it's self. When the rubber is gone and you here that noise sometimes you will always think the worst things are happing to the engine it self when it is just normaly the rubber has worn out or has been burned a way from over heating and not running the engine with water for a short amount of time. And also a loud clicking noise you will here if it is MPI will be the fuel injectors, They will some times make you think something is wrong also by the clicking they do.http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...8093&bnbr=290&bdesc=Exhaust+System+Components See # 7 in the link for your shutters.
