2005 115hp Optimax

Hey all - first post.

I have looked all over, and am unable to find an answer to this issue.

I changed the water pump on my 2005 115hp optimax. That part was pretty easy. Now I am trying to get the shaft back in and I cant get it in all the way without forcing it.

When changing the impeller, I turned the main shaft clockwise while pushing down on the impeller housing to put the impeller in the housing.

The drive shaft will turn either direction, but the prop wont. It will only go in reverse. When I have gotten the shaft into the engine, the shifter will not change the direction of the motor, nor will it allow it to go into neutral. I am afraid I really messed it up. I have the shaft out now again. What would be the steps to get this thing back together and functional. Any help?!

You haven't messed anything up. First make sure you are in reverse on the lower and the controls. Then slide the lower back up and have someone slowly turn the flywheel until the splines line up and it slips in (sometimes you can turn the prop to do this but I find turning the flywheel easier). tighten a couple of bolts and then check to insure the shifting is working fine by hand. Reverse and Forward. In reverse the prob should not spin backward but will free spin forward (with a clicking noise) and visa versa in forward.

I tried that. I got it in, but it wont change into neutral. Local boat place said to try in Neutral, since there is only 1 position.

I find that I am having to hold the "pin" on the lower unit to keep it in neutral. Seriously frustrating - still dont have it it

Can you get the shift control in neutral on the lower when it is not on the boat? Is it the spline type or bolt type?

did you get it squared away yet? I just went through the very same thing about a week ago with the same engine so im a "pro" now...lol But seriously I can help if you are still having issues with it.
