I have a 2005 15hp 4-stroke. The problem I'm having is the baot will not make plane. it is really close. The motor will only turn 4500 rpm at a wide open throttle. It should turn 5500 rpm at WOT. The boat is a Lowe FM165 it is aluminum hull 16'. the prop is a 9p a12. Not sure what the a12 stands for,but that is what is stamped on the prop. I think if I could get maybe 2 more mile/hr the boat would get on plane. I think I need aprop change, but am not sure what size.

Thanks Glenn

4500 rpm, boat not up to plane? Has it ever gotten up to plane?

If you are not up to plane at 4500 RPM, I think the boat is to big/heavy.

However, you are right about 4500 RPM being low for WOT and a smaller prop will help that.

-andy

Re: 2005 Merc 15hp questions

Mercury lists 4 different props to suit your motor - 9x7, 9x8, 9x9 and 9x10 1/2.

It would seem that you have a 9 x 12 which would explain the low WOT RPMs'.

This is obviously a near new motor, I would revist the dealer and ask 'why' he fitted a 12" pitch prop.

Also, there is always the possibility that a 15hp just ain't gunna lift that 16fter out of the water.

Aldo

Re: 2005 Merc 15hp questions

I have never got the boat on plane. I think it weighs about 1200lbs. I have to have this size motor because there is a HP limit on the lakes in this area. Also my top speed is about 8 Mph. The motor has good throttle response until about 3/4 throttle then ithas no pick up at all. I know that I may not be able to get on plane, but I see boats similar in size going twice as fast as me. All of the pontoon boats go faster than me. It makes it painfull to ride to the other end of the lake to fish. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

Glenn

Re: 2005 Merc 15hp questions

All the Mercury props for your motor end in "A12". Try looking at the hub, mine has the diameter and pitch stamped there.

I have a 2002 Mercury 4-stroke 9.9 with a 15hp carb and a 9x9 prop. I just put on the new carb, so I don't have a lot of performance numbers yet. On my boat (12' flat-bottomed, 5' beam), I've had up to a total displacement of 750 pounds and it will achieve 18.5 mph (gps) at 5500 rpms (with extra throttle left over). I'd guess that it could push around 900 pounds at 5500 rpms. With the 9.9 carb, at 750 pounds, it would achieve 11 mph at 4300 rpms (so if the carburetor switch didn't make it a 15hp, it's close).

When you say your boat weighs 1200 pounds, is that your total displacement (boat, motor, gear, people) or just the boat's weight? If you're talking about total displacement, I'd think you should be able to run in the mid teens. I'd go for a 9x8 prop. If it's 1200 pounds before you start adding passenger weight, you might not have enough power to plane. In which case, I'd try the 9.25x7 prop or just keep the one you have and only run at displacement speed.

If you can't plane, don't always push it. You'll probably run around 5 mph at displacement speed (which would be an easy-on-the-motor 2500 or so rpms), versus an engine-killing 4500 rpms at 8 mph.

Re: 2005 Merc 15hp questions

The boat weighs about 1200lbs loaded. I bought a 9X8p prop today will try it out. If this doesn't work I will try the 7p prop. I may end up getting a larger motor and using the 15hp for a kicker motor. Does anybody know how to hook it up as a kicker with remote steering and throttle?

Thanks Glenn

Re: 2005 Merc 15hp questions

Your set-up seems to be underpowered no matter what prop you go with. You'd be much happier with a 25hp minimum What is your hull rated for? 15hp seems to be on the low end. Do you want to put the 15hp on your 16 footer or another hull? just my two cents but it seems redundant to put a 15hp on a 16 footer. what is HP limit on the lake you are on? you could always paint the cowl of the higher HP motor and put on decals reflecting a lesser HP- just kidding.

Re: 2005 Merc 15hp questions

The HP limit is 10HP. I got the 15hp and had new 9.9hp stickers put on it. I will probably end up using this motor as a kicker motor on this boat and buying a larger motor. Can anybody give me some advice on how to rig this up with 2 motors. I dont think there is room to clamp the motor too the transom. How do you hook up the controls to operate 2 motors?

Thanks, Glenn
