hello all,
I have been a 2 stroke guys for 20 years and have done all of my own winterizing. fogging, gear lube, grease prop shaft stabilizer etc... Now I have a new yamaha 200 4 stroke.
What do I need to do to winterize this motor..??
since its fuel injected how is it fogged?
what about the fluch system does that retain any water that could freeze...??
motor oil... is there a drain or down I need to suck it out wiht a pump??
conventional oil or synthetic in the power head/gear case??

thanks

Doesn't the owners manual tell you how to winterize this engine? It should also tell you what oil to use both in the engine and gear case. Since the engine is likely still in warranty, you'd better follow the book to the letter.

The manual indicates the BASIC winterizing procedure. For instance, the manual does not mention draining the fuel vapor canister but the folks at Yamaha will suggest this also be done.

I've got the little sister F150 and have winterized it once already. My motor has a fogging valve on the side near the air filter. I also remove the plugs after fogging and pour some Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders as a bonus precaution for rust prevention. With the plugs removed you can turn the the prop and work the the oil onto the cylinder walls.

Any water in the motor should be able to drain out with the motor tilted all the way down. As a precaution, you can run some some Marine/RV antifreeze through while fogging. I made up a short (3ft) section of garden hose which attaches to the screw top of a 1 gallon windshield wiper fluid plastic bottle with a small 1 in hole cut in the bottom. With plastic bottle inverted and connected to the muffs via the short hose, you can add the anti freeze. Start the motor until it comes out the pee hole and that should mix with any other water that is in the motor to keep it from freezing.

Last year I had the oil changed at the dealer before winterizing. I am switching to synthetic and will change the oil in the spring so that the fogging and other oil into the cylinders doesn't contaminate the new oil.

PAkev, I have the same outboard as you and I would like a better description of where and how to find the fogging valve that you wrote about. thank you

never seen a fogging valve on a yamaha
I hope you did not use the VST pressure tap.
I would rather change the oil before storing it and add a bit of crankcase stor-n-start as well. keeps any acids from eating at the sump bottom. as far as contamination by fogging oil its no worries.
as far as fogging I have found spraying fogging oil into the ISC(IAC to the rest of the world) line to be very effective. its about usless to attept it through the throttle shutters unless you want to fog at 1600 rpm or so.

Re: 2005 yamama 4 stroke 200 winterizing

Rodbolt,

I sprayed fogging oil into the spring valve on the vertical tube next to the brass fuel water cooler. When I pushed it in I got fuel coming out and figured this was a way I could deliver the fogging oil. However, I got very little smoke to indicate effectiveness. I just winterized for this year a few days ago and sprayed directly into the cylinders and started the motor and then removed the plugs again and sprayed more into the cyliners for storage.

I found the standard engine manual that came with the motor to be quite vague and plan to buy a more comprehensive manual this year.

What do the acronyms VST, ISC, and IAC stand for?

VST is vapor seperator, ISC is idle stabilizer contro, IAC is idle air control, another namr for ISC. you messed up.
you now have fogging oil in the VST.
not good.
it WILL gum up and get nasty.
take it to the ramp
run it under a load or launch it and go play. then redo the fogging.
did ya put stabilizer in the fuel tank ?
what you injected was the high pressure side of the fuel rail.
also I reccomend crank case stor-n-start in the oil to help protect the valve train.

I am gonna divulge another secret :)
on the F200-225 remove the top plastic cover, 3 10mm hex bolts. looking aft at the the rear cover you will see a gray hose about 3/4" dia. it runs from the aft plastic cover to a valve looking thingy on the port throttle body. thats the ISC. remove the hose from the AFT cover, start the engine and by all means DO NOT GET HUNG IN THE BELT. while the engine is running about 1K spray the fogging oil into the hose.
its not a procedure to do after refreshing beverages. but its quick easy and painless :) .
I use a pair of needle nose to hold the tube keeping all 10 fingers clear.

I was told by a local yamaha service facility that there is no need to fog if you can start the engine and bring it to operating temp at least once every 30 days. of course it is necessary to put stabilizer in the tank and run it through the engine. Rodbolt you seem to be the expert here so please let me know if this is correct?

as long as the shiny parts dont rust while sitting its fine. all your trying to accomplish with fuel stabilizer and crankcase stornstart and fogging is protection of the engines fuel systems and shiny parts that rust. after that the engine really does not care how cold it gets nor how long it sits.
