So how does one 'add a vane' other than in the design stage? Doesn't help me much.

Quad, does it hesitate going into reverse the first time in the morning. sounds alot like the solonoid pack causing the issue but try doing a transmission flush and see if it helps first

What is involved in the solenoid pack replacement (rough time, cost) and I suppose it is a dealer only job, right?

I'm in San Diego, so it never gets too cold at night (if temperature is an issue) but i do notice that, at times, it takes perhaps a second or two to engage reverse once it has been selected. Just enough to make it seem a little longer than it should be.

the solonoid pack is pretty easy they are a little costly though it bolts up to the valve body . the price i can get it is a little over 200 but i believe list is about 400

Sure beats the cost of rebuilidig the tranny, if you think that's what it is!
