Hey folks

So I am the owner of the above motor, which was purchased from a saltwater fishing resort this spring. The motor has compression of 180 on all four cylinders, 23.7 hours of run time, and hooking it up to Merc's computer shows that it was rarely run above 1500 RPMs for its life thus far (in salt water). I bought it, expecting it to be a fairly new engine, that would provide reliable service for my boat. Plus, it's under warranty until '08.

I'm fairly surprised and disappointed that I have only been able to use the motor twice, very briefly, and on both occasions, the motor has beeped out an overheat alarm, as I rev the throttle up. Motor seems to be pumping water just fine, and although the water is not getting overly hot, the top end of the motor cannot be touched, and mercury's computer hook-up verifies that the motor has been overheated 2x, for up to 4 minutes, on these occasions.

My mechanic has replaced the impellor, which was slightly worn, and checked the thermostat ($300 later). Everything appears to be functioning normally, but the motor is overheating before it can even be opened up. There is lots of oil in it, and I believe the mechanic did a backflush to ensure nothing is trapped in the motor. I will verify this shortly.

I've been doing a little research, and I find that there have been a number of problems with some of the (especially older) merc 4-stroke 50's overheating in this very same manner. It seems that between the powerhead and the lower end of the motor, there is a metal water tube that can corrode, constricting a grommet, which restricts water flow to the power head, resulting in overheat. Merc apparently paid for some of these repairs, but I'm asking myself, could this problem still persist in my 'nearly new' motor, made about 8 years after the early generation motors?

I am presently waiting for a mechanic to have a look at my motor, but I thought I'd ask if any others have experienced this problem, or if anybody has advice for what I should be looking for. Also, what are the odds of problems caused by these overheats? Compression remained unchanged after the first one, which was around 4 minutes.

thanks in advance for your help

cheers

Sorry I can't help but hitting it will bump it back to the top and into view of someone who maybe can.

Longshanks-

i may be having the same problem with me '04 50hp 4stroke, i blew a headgasket this past weekend and i am assuming that it was caused by overheating. I am going to bring this up with my dealer and see what their response is. Any one else heard of this being a problem with Merc 4 strokes?

did your motor give you an overheat signal? My motor was giving me a long steady overheat tone, when I was leaving from the dock, at low RPMs, at 4 minutes or so of operation. Mercury is now looking the motor over to see if the problem can be diagnosed.

I will post back when I find what has occurred.

good luck!

long shanks- update on mine, it was a blown headgasket, wasn't caused by overheating. Dealer hooked it up to computer and it has never been hot. he replaced the headgasket said he ran it at half throttle for 2 hours straight in his tank and never saw any problems. I took it out today and low and behold after an hour of running at 3/4 throttle the oil was turning white like it has water in it again. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be allowing water into the oil? Cracked head is my only thought.

Re: 2006 Mercury 50HP Four Stroke Overheats

Here's the latest on my motor.

It was sold to me as a 'lease return' motor, with ~24 hours on it. Used by a saltwater fishing lodge. Compression and mechanical checked out 'as new', but I had problems with it overheating, the first time I used it.

After a lot of head-scratching, I had a local Merc. mechanic take it apart, and he found chunks of piston, all through the crankcase. Turns out the motor blew up a piston when it was first run. It was rebuilt by a different Mercury tech, and Mercury covered the cost of these new parts and repair. The original 'Merc tech' rebuilt the motor with the new parts, and didn't bother to clean out the (approximately one cup full) of piston shrapnel. It was then run for around 23 hours, and sold to me. This information was not provided to me by the seller, a 'reputable' marine retailer.

To make a long story short, Mercury replaced the pistons, block, head, and oil pump under warranty. The belief was that the overheat was caused, due to the fact that chunks of piston were blocking the oil pump, which caused the motor to overheat -- not enough oil.

So now I have essentially a new motor, which I am proceeding to break in. Figured you guys might want to read this story...
