okay so I've tried everything to figure this out and I just am not getting it. I understand in order to check the timing on the boat, I need to do something to a purple/white wire coming from the distributor in order to put the engine into base timing mode (apparently I am supposed to do this for the idle mixture adjustment too and may explain why i was having issues with. it.). I can not figure out for the life of me how to do this, I just am not getting what is meant by this. The best explanation I've found is located at https://www.perfprotech.com/blog/art...-engine-timing but I just cannot wrap my head around "3. Using a jumper wire, connect the ignition system timing lead (PUR/WHT wire) to a good engine ground (-). This locks the ignition module into the “Base Timing Mode”." When researching how to do this I've seen people mention a 12g wire or even a paper clip. Is there like a connector or something I just create a loop with either a 12g wire or paper clip? I guess the reason I am not comprehending this if this is the case is because of the "...to a good engine ground (-)..."

For reference, in case you happen to look at the link above, I am following the V6/V8 carbureted engines instructions

Perhaps someone could show me a picture or something of what I am supposed to do?

You want to ground the pur/wht wire. Grounding means to connect to the motor somewhere. The link shows it being connected to the grounds stud on the rear of the block

Find any piece of wire laying around and strip insulation from both ends.

Locate the pur/wht wire and connect one end of the wire stripped into the pur/wht wire end

The other end of the stripped wire connect it to any bare spot (no paint) on the motor, Like the carb

okay that makes sense. I assume the purple white wire is not hooked up to anything correct?
