Just read the specs in a magazine. Its based on the 25 hp block and weighs in at 177 pounds. I can't imagine who would want to buy one of these. And its a 2-stroke to boot.

I replaced the 18 on my fishing boat last year with a Yami 25 at 105 lbs. I didnt want to wait for the E-tec because nobody could guarantee the introduction date. Now I'm glad I have the Yami.

I guess they wanted to make it so it's hard to steal.

I agree that 177 lbs is too much for a 15hp.

But if you want to compare your Yami 25 which must be a 2-stroke if it only weighs 105lbs you are looking at two different types of motors. Your Yami is a carbureted 2-stroke, the etec is a DI 2-stroke. The etec will have far better fuel efficiency, less pollution, less oil consumption and will be quieter than your 2-stroke.

DI 2-strokes like the etec should only be compared with 4-strokes. If you compare the 2010 Yami 25HP 4-stroke with a 2010 Etec 25HP DI 2-stroke you will find the Yami is heavier.

Oh I agree with everything you said. But sometimes the efficiency and pollution has to take a back seat if the boat can't handle the weight of the motor. 25 was the rated max for my boat.

My original comment was directed specifically at the E-tec 15. Even comparing it to the Yami 4-stroke 15, its still 50 pounds heavier. And, btw, the Yami 25 4-stroke is 7 pounds lighter than the 25 E-tec.

I've been an Evinrude guy since 1968. I just think that some of their current models have lost their competitiveness!

Yeah for sure. I believe there is still a place for small, light, carbureted outboards.

And the weight difference all depends on the model you are comparing. Etec 25's are 146 - 182lbs. Yami 4-stroke 25's are 170 - 181lbs.

All the etec 25hp models except for 2 are lighter than the lightest yami.

cheers~!

I stand corrected. I didn't listen to my own best advice.....I believed what I read in a magazine....LOL.

The new 15 data isn't even published yet. They used the 25 data with electric start and power trim.

In any event, still too heavy for an old boat.

I checked the yammy site and do not even see a 2 stroke 25 listed. Do they still make carbed 25 HP motors??

Hello Fella's.
This is a temporary engine put on the market due to company politics I won't get into now.
Engineering these small engines is phenomenally expensive and takes a lot of sales to recoup the investment.
They will have a smaller one in the future, I can almost guarantee they will knowing this company.
They have some incredible engineers and I can 't see them letting this go too long.

Yeah way to heavy for me. If I were in the market for a 25hp I would be buying a carb'd 2-stroke just like you did.

And they do have the data published, if you go to the evinrude website and click on the ETEC High Output (H.O.) category it is in that list.

But you are right it is the same as the 25hp data because it is the same block.

The thing to remember is that the 15HO is for LARGER walleye, multi-species, and offshore boats. On the west coast, it is perfect for the salmon trolling boats also. It is not a lightweight portable outboard like the carbureted 9.9 and 15's were. The Evinrude 15HO designed is for a particular purpose, not a "do everything" type of outboard.

The neat thing is it is direct fuel injected for instant starts and smooth smokeless running, without the cold natured characteristics of a carbureted 4 stroke. It won't have gummed up carbs either if not used for a month or two.

It's such a shame that Johnson was forced to drop their 2-strokes after 2005. Now that the deal with using Suzuki 4-strokes is over, Johnson doesn't exist anymore (just a legal placeholder at BRP).

I don't have anything against reducing pollution, but when Johnson has to drop their entire lineup, I see red!
I think Evinrude is on the right path with their
"inovator of the world" strategy. Meeting government dictates has forever changed the way manufacturers & designers can ply their trade. Consumers have no say in it; the government dictators hold all the cards. Just who does the government work for anyway? I always thought it was to represent the wishes of the people. Silly me!

just yet another example of the fed passing legislation that will cost us more money and is based on a pack of lies about environmental impact of human generated "ozone depleting gases". just like banning R-12/R-22 freon cost us lots of money for no reason based on fact...I am getting tired of stupid politicians ruining everything and making it more and more costly to live.

Yeah they still have the 25 2-stroke. You don't see it in many dealerships though. They are really pushing the 4-stroke.

Lots of conflicting in formation here. When I bought mine I was told that as of 1/1/09 they would not be available for retail sales....would only be sold to commercial users.

Early in 09 I was told that they stopped making them altogether, so just limited to stock in hand.

The last news I heard was that they would not be sold, period, after 2010.

I don't know of a dealer that has one, but you can still buy them on the internet. Except no sales to CA.

The link I posted was to Yamaha-motor.ca. This is their Canadian site. As of today they have 2-stroke engines listed on their site. I notice the US site yamaha-motor.com does not. Maybe the cdn site is out of date or maybe they are still available in Canada.
