You have to buy what are called "muffs". They look like ear muffs and fit around the outdrive where the water pickup is located to feed the engine water from a garden hose. You can buy them at any marine store and they usually have them at places like walmart and other sporting goods stores.

Once you have fitted the muffs to your drive and you have the water running, you can start your engine and let it run at idle speeds. I was told don't rev over 1500rpm while running on the muffs so I would heed that advice.

Absolutely! What happens when you rev the engine too high is the water pump tries to draw more water then the garden hose can supply. That can cause the pump to run partially dry, sucking air in from around the sides of the muffs... Only bad things happen after that

Remember to lower the outdrive out of the trailer position whenever running the boat. The driveshaft turns even in neutral and can bind the ujoints. Something I learned on Iboats.

The preferred flushing kit to use would be the quicksilver/Mercruiser part number 44357Q2. if it's not available, iboats offers some flushing kits as well at a good price, Motor Flusher, Heavy Duty for Mercruiser 73971A2 4435702 44357Q2 44357A2, Mercury, Mariner - Sierra 18-9010 - iboats

This video may help you out as well,
How To Flush Clean A Boat Engine - YouTube

Also it's best run the engine at 1300 RPM while on the garden hoes for best overall results.

Congrats on the new boat.:)

Thanks everyone for all the help. I've had it out twice, and think I will enjoy it.
