I replaced my 1985 Johnson Evinrude 30hp with a newer 2015 Etec 30hp. Despite taping the holes with duct tape I put muffs on and no water is coming out of p hole. Samething happened when I first got the motor but I launched it anyway and water discharged through the p hole no problem when she sat in the water. Original owner did tell me he had the impeller & water pump replaced after late season muskie fishing due to sub zero temps.

My days are numbered as we're closing up the cottage. Should I pull out the boat again launch it & see if water exits the p hole. Then winterize it & store away. Or did I miss something with the muffs and taping up holes to get it to discharge or should I use a large storage bin filled with water for the lower unit ? Or do I bring it to dealer to investigate ?

I run e-tecs in big tubs, not muffs. Please explain just which holes you are taping up? I recall that being a merc trick but never heard it needed on etecs. I admit I only take care of four of the little ones.

tiny holes just above where the muff would slid over ...as per the operators manual.

Muffs are worthless for testing waterpump function. Back into water at ramp or test run in a barrel deep enough to cover the waterpump and test again. A gentleman brought me an ‘85 35hp that wasn’t peeing on muffs.. I barrel tested and everything was fine..peeing/cooling normally..
