For fun I looked at Washington’s trailer laws since the boat was originally sold in Washington to a Washington resident. Washington requires brakes on any trailer grossing 3000lbs and up so why doesn’t my trailer have brakes? Looked up the original sale paperwork and saw that EZ-Loader rated the trailer’s gvwr at 2999 lbs.
I’ll look into adding brakes

I use my '07 BMW X3 to tow my '99 Bryant 182 Limited (according to specs, 2500 lbs, plus 700 lbs for the trailer = 3200) with no issues. And my X3 only has a 3500 lb towing capacity. My trailer does have surge brakes though...

We have towed our Boston Whaler Nantucket 190 with a Ford Exploder rated 5000 pounds, my wife's V6 Jeep Liberty rated 5000 pounds and a Tundra V8 rated at 8,000 something and currently my Tacoma TRD V6 rated at 6400 pounds, lifted with heavy duty suspension, air ride in the rear etc. It tows the the Whaler all over, coast to coast.

The trailer has brakes, I think the all up weight with fuel and stuff is around 4,000 pounds. Plus all the stuff in and on the Taco. Point is, I think the Highlander can handle it if you get the tow package for the full 5000 pounds.

Highlander would do just fine. Im towing my 21.5 foot Ebbtide 210 with a wakeboard tower, full tank of gas, skiing gear, two anchors, 2 batteries and cooler with a Tacoma v6, which has a similar to a Highlander engine. It just starts doing 9-10mpg instead of regular 16-18, but I did not feel like the engine is being overloaded. However you can chck the specks of your specific boat on the NADA boat guides, add all the additional weight (gas, batteries, gear) and compare to the towing capacity of the SUV
