A guy on the seacraft site found his cap would not go back, this is what it looked like, see pic below. I guess he now owns a 4 inch wider boat.!
http://www.classicseacraft.com/foru...37&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=4&vc=1

It might be just your pic but some of the work does look dry, but if you know it to be good in person then its just the photo.
You know what poor glass work looks like because you already removed some.

By the time you get to the non critical areas of the boat you'll be a resin expert, kinda backwards eh? ;
And I bet its not as ez to get in and out of the boat with a transom in the way.
US composite sells hi quality resin and supplies, can't go wrong with them but I have to buy cheaper stuff meself.
With the complete transom wall removal as you've done...
it would be foolish to use cheaper resin anyway.

Here's a cap that wouldn't fit.

I removed 8 or 9 inches from the depth of the hull due to the hull being extra deep as a cuddy cabin. Now I wish I had about 4 inches of the height back. Didn't allow for the 4 inches I raised the floor to gain more deck space when lowering the hull sides.:( Still works ok just would have been nice to have the extra 4 inches of free board.

Hey guys - unfortunately, I am fighting a losing battle with the flu - so all I can do is look at the boxes of goodies I got in from US Composites.

This weekend I leave for a week in Punta Cana, so my next update will not be till the 20th or so.

Oops, since you are not working on yours, if you want to come down and knock mine out for me that would be great!

Regards,

James

Re: 21' ProLine CC Rebuild Progress with Pics

Gentleman, I am back from Punta Cana and back to the business of amateur boat building! :D:D

Fortunately, the weather has been just freakin? beautiful here in Southeastern NC ? the temp was in the 70?s all weekend. It would be perfect weather to continue glassing in my new transom, but for the sake of my sanity, I think I need to change things up a bit. So I thought I would spend some some time creating my two inside stringers. Man, it was so nice out, I decided to pull the boat out from under the house. Grinding is so much easier outside!

Using the ?template? I created in an earlier post, I cut out the pieces needed from a couple sheets of regular ?? plywood. Each stringer will be will be 1? thick. Because the two inside stringers are over 16? long, I will use three sections of stringer, each joined with an overlap. The rear section will be the longest @ a full 8 feet, and have an 8 inch overlap.

Once the pieces were cut, I used a waterproof, heavy-duty construction adhesive to glue the pieces of each section together. Each section was then clamped and left to cure overnight. Finally, the bottom edge of each section was saturated with multiple coats of resin. I think I brushed three coats on over a two hour period.

To prep the hull, I used a grinder and some 36grit to sand down flat the track the old stringer was seated in. I also flatened out some areas to be able to tab the stringer to the hull when I am ready to install it. After a quick wipe with Acetone, the track looks great.

Regards,

James

You got the boat looking good 83!

We're having rainy weather here on the OBX. I can't seem to catch the weather dry enough to do anything, or I'm having to work or have other things to do.
I've about resigned myself to the fact that it will probably be spring before I can get back to working on the boat. max! :(

Can you believe the stuff grows too!

When I say "its unseasonably warm here", that also translates to "its December and I have to mow the grass".

Re: 21' ProLine CC Rebuild Progress with Pics

So the weather is still just ridiculously warm here in Southeastern NC ? today was in the mid 70's! Not bad for the 28th day of DECEMBER! :D Even took the labs to the beach!

So more stringer work this weekend! This time, I assembled and installed the 2nd sections of my inside stringers ? the process is now a familiar one. . .

1. glue stringer pieces together to create a section ? let glue cure overnight
2. soak multiple coats of resin onto hull end of stringer section - let resin cure overnight
3. install stringer section onto generous beads 3m 5200 ? let 5200 cure overnight

Finally, after the stringers are set, I cram beads of 5200 into every crack and crevice between the stringer and the hull. I know I don?t have to use 5200 ? in fact, I could save about 50% if I just used a regular PL Adhesive. I am just partial to 5200. Plus, if I am 40 miles offshore, and the sh&t hits the fan, I would feel better knowing my stringer doesn?t have a better chance of coming through the hull on some monster wave because I tried to save $20 bucks on adhesive.

And you might notice I ended up using a very high-tech tool to keep the stringer up onto the hull while the 5200 is drying. . .

Re: 21' ProLine CC Rebuild Progress with Pics

Also this weekend, I had a buddy come over and help me teardown my console so that I can get it back to a solid piece and start planning what I want to do with it. . .

First, he had to remove all the old hardware from the console, including windshield frame, steering column, electrical switches, cabinet hardware framing, and the million or so screws that were everywhere.

Next, he flipped the console over and used a wonder bar and hammer to chisel away all the old, rotted wood pieces used as screw backings.

Finally, he drilled out every screw hole using a half-inch drill bit and gave the whole thing a quick sanding using a plam sander and some 60grit.

Before I can start filling all the holes with peanut butter, I had to make some templates to use as backing so the resin doesn?t fall through the hole. To do this, I measured and cut out a few templates from quarter inch plywood, then wrapped the templates in plastic. The templates just have to be clamped under the console and I am ready to start filling. . .

Regards,

James

Its easy to get friends to come help you out when the lobster tails you throw on the grill look like these! :D:D

Every time I have to pick up that *&!$#@! &^$%!@ **&)$@~ grinder, I just think about all the fish and lobster I will be able to eat for the summer of 09! - its the only thing that gets me through!

Good grief have I gotta get my arse to work!!! Man you are doing a damn fine job. That thing's lookin great! :)

You said in an earlier post your cap wasn't gonna fit. What is the game plan regarding that? I have take great care in trying to insure mine will fit but as of yet don't know how that's gonna play out. Still haven't finished painting the bottom. Once that mess is done I'll get to finish the deck and then the moment of truth. Cross your fingers and keep up the good work!

proline.....you use what ever tactics you can to keep going......getting the itch from glass dust....holding a grinder.....working your butt off thii the sweat is driping off your nose into the fresh resin........all this is not fun......

but read the posts in johnnys pics of work so far when he gets his on the water for the first time after the build..........thats when the reward comes !

That wasnt me bud - that was someone else talking about a cap that would not go back on. I think their solution was to split the cap at the front and trim it down as needed.

For my project, I put a rod across the high sides of the stern before I took my cap off to ensure the hull wouldnt flex out while I was working to get the transom back in. Also, after I seated the new transom, I actually put the cap back on to make sure it would fit.
