Greetings Iboats!

I have been thinking of purchasing a boat and getting it ready for next season , I came across this 1988 Sylvan 22' Offshore , the boat has NO MOTOR (outboard) and has a soft floor. Can I ask your opinion on the value of this boat?

Things I have noticed are

Trailer will need almost ALL new hardware including winch , rollers , lights

The floor will most likely have to be replaced along with carpet ... whats the boat worth and exactly what am I getting myself into?

(I have experience in restoring a 1972 MFG , where I removed the floor and stringers and replaced them along with all the interior , that being said I dont want to get that involved ever again!!)

Im hoping this floor will be alot easier than the glass boat stringer deal!

I made the owner an offer and he accepted , I just want to be sure Im not overpaying , considering I wioll have to purchase a large outboard and controls , all the electronics , trailer hardware and roofs / tops ....

SO...
Whats she worth?

Not to be a jerk, but a trashed trailer holding a boat that needs a new floor and power? I'd be hard pressed to risk more than a few hundred on it ... maybe $300. If the hull is in good shape, a tinny will last for quite a while and take quite a beating so that's a plus ... but sounds like you have a LOT of work ahead of you.

Somewhere between 900 and 3000.

There are really too many unknowns based on the info.

Looks like a nice boat. Stringers are all aluminum so there should be no rot below the floor and the transom should come out pretty easy. I'm no expert but that looks comparable to a Starcraft Islander. I think somebody just posted a question on the value of an older one of those. If I find it I'll post the link. Otherwise look around online at prices for Islanders and that may give you a rough idea on pricing. I can say I'd pay more than $300 for it. The windshield alone is probably worth close to that. I guy near me recently sold an empty hull for a plain Jane Sylvan 21 footer with no cuddy or outboard for $1200.

As for the trailer: rollers are $7-$10 each, winch can't cost more than $50, lights easily under $70, and new wiring $15. Worst case as long as the metal is all sound is adding an axle and a 3500lb axle is about $150 complete.

To be honest the floor does not scare me, its the wall where the cuddy begins. Im not looking forward to removing the cuddy and dash along with all the electric stuff. I wonder if the floor can be replaced up to the cuddy? The boat is $1900. And im in no hurry to use it. I just dont want to bite off more than i could chew

Everything there is doable. Don't think you have to remove the cuddy or dash. If you're just doing the floor. I would think a rechargeable drill and a few bits would dis-assemble the entire boat above the deck. Get one of these panels and epoxy the panel in place and you're done. With a new transom (if needed) and your labor you would end up with a boat that would last you the rest of you life. So do you what a project AGAIN? Think about it. Now I have never touched a tinny but from what has been said above I would love this project in my backyard with aluminum stringers ( no rot below the floor ). Addressing the price is another thing. $1900 would be very tops for me with intent of keeping this boat and selling the one in my sig.

Here is an add for a Sylvan offshore:

"Sylvan Offshore 22 foot. 1986 but in excellent condition. Replaced lower unit and all bellows last year. Has two props, one four bladed composite and one three bladed aluminum. Ship to shore radio, fire extinguisher, flares, life jackets, fish finder, canvas top, downriggers, dual battery's with switch, and more. Great boat for cruising or fishing. Small cabin in front with lots of storage. Has 3 liter140HP Mercruiser that runs great and is very good on fuel. Also has Evinrude 6HP kicker with ez steer attachment that allows boat to be steered from the front. Boat runs so good that we crossed lake Michigan from Frankfort to Green Bay. This boat is similar to a Starcraft Islander. Please call 989.387.6159 or email for more details. Asking $5000/obo. Motivated seller!"

It is a very desireable hull, at least around my parts. Without a motor, and even with a floor and possibly cabin bulkhead in need of replacement, I would still value it at $1500ish.

I see you're in Ohio, so you will pay more for this hull, as would I, then down south or in the midwest. This is a great lakes boat, and you're gonna have to pay for it.

Am i able to take the cuddy wall off door and all and replace it without breaking rivets? I would like nothing more than to replace the entire floor from the bow to the transom, just hoping its not to much for me

If the floor is OK in the cuddy, i see no reason to replace it. The deck should end where the door is. There is probably a aluminum trim piece there

I will have to check to see where the deck ends, i was under the ipmression it was one solid deck and the cuddy wall sat on top of it.

Nice looking boat here; as for what you are getting into, this thread will give you a rough idea.

You boat looks to be in much better shape, so it probably won't be as bad. Just getting ready to floors and transom myself in a 25' Cheiftain and it looks like it's going to take 2 full 4'X8' sheets of ply + 1' of another + wood sealer and a bunch of rivets just to do the cockpit floor. Not really to expensive as far as boat overhauls go, just labor intensive.

Just saw the ad;No way would I pay his full asking price for that, especially without a motor.

I have an 82. The cuddy wall in mine was easy to remove. All screws and bolts, no rivets

Where did you find it. I looked but couldn't find. How much was the asking price?

Re: 22' Sylvan Offshore whats it worth?

I have a couple more questions,

#1 How hard is this transom going to be to get it out? Do I have to tear out (by cutting or removing rivets the rear of the boat? most of the jobs I have looked at on this forum concerning islander models , have been inboard models and transom removal was tedious and alot of the boat had to come apart. Being that this boat has transom fit for an outboard , how much easier / harder will this job be? Not looking forward to this transom

Re: 22' Sylvan Offshore whats it worth?

Doesn't look too bad;there is a series of pics of the process in the thread I posted. Looks much easier than doing an I/O; At least you don't have to yank an engine and outdrive. Since it don't have an outboard hanging off the back of it right now, half the battle is already over. ;)
