225 1995 saltwater

I have an issue with one of my engines. when I have the boat in neutral, I can rev it to 6000 rpm, when I put it in gear I can not get it to jump out of the hole like before. It will get to 2800 for a while, and when I finally get it on plane, it will max out at 3800. any suggestions??

well either toss the prop and you will have all the RPM you wish or trouble shoot the motor, test compression and spark and if they pass fix your fuel issue. a model number is imperative as the 225 in those years were built in a 2.6l and 3.1L versions and only share the same paint code.
