hello everyone...awhile back I posted a few threads about my 228 to 260 replacement project. Im about ready to rebuild the 350, but before I do id like to ask a few opinions...so im not wasting my time. I have a 1978 century 5000. Now, in the boatspecs section of this site, it saysthe max rated horsepower for my boat is 228. Are they airing on the side of caution? Basically I want to know if my boat will handle the 260? Any input will be appreciated, thx everyone!

Another question I had also....my boat will never see saltwater. Are s.s. head gaskets still necessary?

Go stainless on any scenario you can- why not? cost difference in boating dollars is nominal.

Even fresh water will eat a plain steel head gasket. Plain steel is used in automotive applications where anti freeze is used, and that is what deters the corrosion. Run raw water in your car and things will rust up in your cooling system. Same applies when you run raw water through your boat. That's why your head gasket is stainless steel and your freeze plugs are brass. Even fresh water has a small amount of salt in it that leaches up from the ground.

Will there be a noticeable difference between the 305 and the 350 on the water?

hello...just a follow up from last post. Was wondering if anyone could tell me if ill notice any differences in performance from going from a 305 to a 350? And how significant will these differences be, if any? Thx

Yes there will be a difference, you have more torque along with 30 more HP. It will not be huge and may only notice it most when your fully load and pulling something. If you always have average load, 3-4 folks you would still notice the difference but not as much. Top end may be with a Century I'll guess at 5 MPH. Would also may need a different prop pitch

If it cost about the same this would be a no brainer. There is no replacement for displacement
