I have a 79 235HP V6 Johnson Outboard. Whenever I start it up for the first time that day, the starter kicks out just as the motor fires. I have replaced the starter drive and the ignition parts.Sometimes it takes 15 - 20 minutes to get started. After it starts the first time, it runs great and doesnt seem to kick out as much after that. Any suggestions.

Your problem is not usually caused by the starter or any of the starter circuit. Do a search and you'll find several threads on the same subject.

I had a similar problem with my'82 235. Turned out it was a fuel problem - it would fire once, disengage the starter, but not start. I struggled for a long time before the simple fix - it was related to the way I was using the primer (pushing in the key). What is your starting procedure?

I usually push in the key (prime it)unil it fires the first time. Then I just try to start it with out priming. If it doesnt start after a few tries, I prime it until it starts.
