24 volt wiring

I have a minnkora 24 volt 74lbs thrust<br />my problem is I keep blowing 50 amp fuses<br />till the other day, on a windy day we uses it a lot and it melted the plug in, I want to re wire from the 2 battreies and need help-suggestions on how,gage wire,type plug in etc...<br />the boat lenth is 20 ft to where I need to mount the plug adapter

First, scrap the fuse holder and replace it with a resettable circuit breaker. If your trolling motor batteries are mounted in the back of the boat and it is 20 ft to the front, you should use 6 gauge wire. If the connector is melted, replace it with a new, quality connector.

when you say resettable circuit breaker<br />do you mean somthing like a fuse box like ahouse?<br />also what would be a quality connector. could you maybe give brand names.<br />By ths way thanks for your reply and help

There are two types of circuit breakers. a manually resettable is like a breaker you find in your home but it has wires attached to it rather than contacts. An automatic breaker is more common, less expensive, and will work just fine in your application. They are available in ratings up to 50 Amps. They have a metal tab that mounts to the positive terminal of the battery. The positive wire to the trolling motor hooks to another terminal on the breaker. It resets itself automtically when it cools. Check "iboats.com" (this site) or "Cabelas.com" or your local sporting goods or marine dealer. Both the connector and manual circuit breaker are routinely advertised as "Ranger Style". Another connector type is called a twist-lock. Either type are far better over the long-haul than the plastic plugs typically found in most boats.
