I have looked all over for this specific application and couldnt find it! Its a 1995 14ft Livingston with a 25hp 2stroke, I have checked the fuel for mixture 6 gallon tank with 16 ounces of oil. Just like the book says, new plugs, clean fuel filter. Gone out with 2 people and its is not as sluggish as with 3 people. Tried different motor angle adjustments as well as moving people around in the boat with no luck. Just started missing and getting a little vibration when it starts to over rev, of course I immediatley back off the throttle when this happens. It is a 20in long shaft. Thanks for any help you can give me

The cavitation plate that exists just above the propeller..... where is that plate in relation to the bottom of the boat at the transom/keel?

Your propeller is fittet to its hub by a pressed in rubber safety bushing. After hitting buttom, or simply by age these bushings dry out or wear down, and prop starts slipping on hub at high trust. As your motor has more torque than one should believe, its nothing one can reproduce, just by trying to turn prop by hand power, this thing lays out 25 HP !. Draw a line with a speed marker over hub and center nut. ( clean it a little first ) Take a ride and make it overrev a little. Stop and see if the whole line still is unbroken, which it probably isnt. If thats the problem, you can find a prop shop that will replace the bushing for you, no big deal. Another cause could be ventilation, which is prop drawing air down from surface. Ventilation will usually be less if weight is distributed back in boat, or boat carries heavier load, which I understand doesnt help.

The plate is about 1" above the transom/keel, I have a pic but not sure how or if I can post it here!

Thanks

If the engine has performed properly in the past with the plate at that height, then as G Dane states, I would suspect a failing propeller.

However, if this problem has existed from day one, the engine is mounted too high and the propeller is not being able to function properly at that height. If this is the case, the cavitation plate should be approximately 3/4" below the bottom of the boat (keel) at the transom.

Word, everyone will be glad to help but start a new topic with your problem. Otherwise it gets way too confusing, believe me. Can't keep track of who gave what advice to whom about what problem or symptom. Welcome to the iBoats boards!

Re: 25 hp Evinrude Missing, over reving, really sluggish

OK I went to the local shop here in this humble little village town I live in and the guy inspected the prop and it is official! It's spun! So now I had a choice to make, buy a new prop for $110 or send it out to have it done. Well let me tell ya, I asked the guy at the shop when it could be done and he told me they send them out. "Well, when would I get it back I said" He then said that they pick up every thursday and you get it back the following tuesday! So im talking no boat for almost a full week during salmon season! I couldnt do it! So they called around for me and found a prop that I joyfully went and picked up 40 miles away! Needless to say the boat and I will be mooching for Salmon in the morning! CHEERS Thanks for the help! :D

I would recomend that you send the spun prop in to get it rebuilt also.

It will come in real handy next time you have a prop problem.

Good luck!

OK I replaced the prop with a new one!
And damn skippy it is doing the same thing!
Motor Vibrates and has a slight bounce to it almost like its missing! Maxed out about 8mph with 3 people in it! Dunno what to do, my neighbor said it could be the gas. I argue that because Ive put new fuel in like everytime Ive been out! Next step is the local Evinude dealer to figure it out! RAAHHHHHHHHH! HELP!

Just a thought, but what spun the prop in the first place? That vibration may be something coming apart internally, in the L/U maybe,

Like I said, just a thought

Mike

The motor is 10years old and I doubt the past owner replaced it as he was not on the water much! THe boat was mainly used in freshwater, I have only used it in saltwater! This is why I believe the prop spun. It ran without a flaw when I first bought the boat, just recently have I had these issues.
Thanks!

It's a posibility, over reving & vibration would seem to indicate something slipping, like maybe the gears are getting worn.

Mike

Your symtoms don't sound like a bad clutch dog
but does it chunk or thump like you hit something?Or is it simply slipping out of gear.
Some motors have a detent to help hold it in gear. Have you checked the gear lube for metal pieces? If you have remote shift it may simply be out of adjustment.
Just hoping we can save you a big repair good luck.
