Hello All,

I purchased an OMC tach for my 1997 25hp Johnson. The motor is remote controlled. The mechanic that sold it to me said I needed a 5 pulse tach and it has that right on the face.

The tach has 4 wires coming from it.

Grey--which I hooked to the grey from the harness

Purple--Which I hooked to the "B" or battery pole of my ignition switch.

Blue- Whic I combined with the Purple on the "B" pole on the ignition switch

Black--Which I hooked to one of the ground poles of the ignition switch.

When I turn the Ignition switch to on, The backlight lights up and the needle goes to about 200rpm. When I start the motor the needle stays right where it is, no change with change in rpm.
When I shut the motor down the tach zeros.

I am stumped, I rechecked my connections, all are fine.

Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Ps, everything else is working as it should.

Jim

You need to check your charging system. The Tach will not operate if there is no signal. Take voltage reading with the motor off and then again with it running at about 2000 RPM's(Fast Idle). If no change, rectifier is probably shot...

Sorry, forgot to mention that I checked the voltage going to a battery charge guage with the motor idling on muffs. Voltage slowly rising as engine idled.

I checked the voltage with my meter just to see how accurate the analog guage was.

Any ideas?

Something seems amiss, as it should zero when you turn the ignition key to the on position. The only thing I can muster right now is the Tach. is defective. It's happened before....Sounds like you have the wiring correct and the charging system is good, so it should work. Are you sure the ground is a good ground? Try hooking it to the ground strip at your fuse block and see if there is any change. Maybe others will have more to say....

Try another yellow wire at the terminal strip at the engine. The gray will likely be going to the yellow with gray strip....move the gray to another yellow. If the tach works, rectifier is bad.
