Do all outboards have an above the water "viewable" water pump? My friend got a new (used) evinrude 25hp tiller handle (E25TELCSA) and during a recent boating trip we noticed it was smoking a little bit. I asked if it was still peeing out water and he said "no". We had been through some shallow and muddy water which made me think maybe the water pump line was clogged We got out some wire to clean the port for the water pump and couldn't find it. He wasn't sure if the motor every peed water or not.

My question is that maybe this motor doesn't pee out water like most?

Yes it does, a plastic nipple in the lower motor cover. However, there should be a healthy spray coming out the big hole in the backside whether the telltale hole is open or not.

Ok, well are you familiar with exactly where that plastic nipple would be? Also, the only large hole we noticed on the back is about 1/4 down the shaft there is two holes that look like exhaust holes...is that what you are referring to?

I believe FR is referring to what they call a Tell Tale. When you get the chance to look at your motor again. Take the top cover (cowling) off of the motor and have a look around the head side of the motor towards the bottom of the power head. When you stand towards that back side of the motor the tell tale should be on the right side I believe. It will be attached to the what is called the lower cowling or as FR said the lower motor cover. And it should have all of what FR listed.

Here is a link to show the tell tale location http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=220638&highlight=Tell+Tale

Post #30 is a picture of mine that will give you the general idea.

Re: 25hp Evinrude Water Pump

thanks for both the responses. Wildaniminal, thanks for the pictures. The nipple (tell tale?) in that picture is very similar to the one on the motor. We poked around on it with a neede and found the nipple to be clogged up. After that, we followed the hose back to where it connects to the engine and pulled the tube off and blew threw it/ poured water through it. Water and air passed through with no problem now.

hopefully, the motor will pee now. I've got some muffs to attach a water hose to run the engine, but where do they need to be placed in order to get the best water to the motor while testing it? Just above the prop skeg plate there are three holes in a plate...I'm assuming that is the manifold where the water line and impeller are located?

Good deal on the tell tale and good job. But you know what it means if it doesn't put out water after all of that? That means you might half to replace the water pump impeller.

For the muffs I honestly am not that fimiliar with that motor. This area that you are talking about above the prop is normally the area to put the muff on. Note: Put the muffs on from the front side of the motor towards the transom so you wont accidently cut the water hose up with the prop if you happen to have or put the motor in gear.

If need be you can get a barrel or some kind of tin garbage can and fill it with water and run the motor out of that just make sure the water level is up over the holes you are talking about. I assume the motor is attached to a boat still correct?

Here is a link to a website that gives you the break down and parts number of evinrude and johnson motors if you end up needing to replace the water pump impeller.

Just make sure your model number matches the diagram of the motor listed. Or you can search the catalog by typing in your model number also.

Not sure without looking up the parts list, but muffs may not work on your engine. If the exhaust goes out through the hollow propeller, it will work. Otherwise, if the prop is not hollow, muffs won't work and you have to put it in a barrel.

Having said all that, you can't test a water pump on muffs anyway. Water will go through even a worn out pump because it is being force-fed by the hose pressure. Only way to test pump operation is to put it in the water, whether it be lake or barrel.

Yes, you have found the tell tale. The other hole I spoke of is the (two) exhaust relief holes you mentioned. Water blows out there with some exhaust.

Ok, will try and run it in a barrell.

Just for clarification.... when we run it in the barrell and water is coming out of the tell tale then everything is fine, we aren't burning up the engine anymore?

Re: 25hp Evinrude Water Pump

There should be a study stream coming out of the tell tale. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

Also I say that if the water impeller hasn't been changed out in the past few years I would change the impeller.

I don't know what I was thinking with the muffs, like FR said that pressure from the hose would push the water out, and it would be deceiving on to if it was working properly or not.
