There is a leak at the prop shaft on my '72 25HP Johnson. I have been able to find the complete gear case head assy, but at over $100.00, I was wondering if the seal in it could be replaced once the brass bushing is removed. And how to remove the bushing and replace it with out damaging the head assy,
Has this been done?

I'm not sure exactly about your motor, but most any outboard it's pretty simple to replace the prop seals... For the simple reason that it's pretty easy to damage them! A little monofiliment caught in the prop can cut them to shreads...

Of course there's a double seal that's very easily replaced. Seals are available from Evinrude, or on Ebay.

Re: 25HP gearcase seal question

Seal kit ($25) is a lot cheaper than replacing the lower unit. You will need to pull the lower unit and remove the skeg to get to the gearcase. Then the prop seal bushing just lifts out. You can then gently tap the seal out of the bushing from the back side. Sometime there are holes in the bushing so you can fit a punch in there to knock out the seal. If no holes, a screwdriver will work. Don't worry about damaging the old seal, just don't damage the bushing. Clean up the bushing and tap the new seal into place.

The brass bushing is cast in place and does not come out. Pry, punch, knock, yank or cut the seal out whatever works for you. Just be careful not to break or damge the head.
