i have a 25hp johnson tracker. i'm not positive on the year, but it's like a 92-96. the problem is this: runs good through the whole throttle range until wide open. it will then sputter a bit and die out. when the cover is removed and you run at wide open, it runs fine. so it seems to be an air issue. does the carb just need a good cleaning or are there other issues here?? thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like an exhaust leak. Especially since the motor runs fine with the cover removed.

Cleaning and rebuilding the carb is never a bad idea if it's been a long time since last cleaned, but if your motor idles smooth, and runs smooth throughout the throttle range with the cover off, I'd say you check your exhaust system for leaks.

It would help if you had a service manual and posted the model and serial # for your motor. If you do, someone will be able to give you more details on what to check for the exhaust leak.

Good Luck,
Kev
