At the end of the day, as part of my clean and store process, is it better to kill the engine with the kill switch (meaning leaving engine & carbi full of fuel) or disconnect the fuel at the tank and run it dry 'till it stops?

I would have thought leaving the engine full of fuel/oil mixture would aid lubrication & protection untill the next outing, but I've heard conflicting opinions.

With premix engines, you would be starving the engine of lubricating oil as well as fuel (when you run it dry). 2stroke fuel/oil mix will last a LONG time before deteriorating and varnishing in the carb and fuel system. It's not necessary to drain the fuel after every outing. My 2strokes sometimes sit for 4-6 months without draining fuel and I haven't had a problem yet

Run it dry. If you don't use it for a long time, you won't get the carb full of jello mess.

Thanks guys, sounds like the jury is still out on this one... my gut feeling is if it's only for a week or so (maybe up to a couple of months) it's probably wiser to leave the engine full of fuel...

Don't thing you will get a general consensus on this one nool. Everyone has there own views and practices. If one method was better than the other than I think we would all be doing it but it really boils down to personal preference. My preference is to leave the fuel in the system and heres my logic. If you drain the fuel, even the last drop, there are still wetted surfaces left. What is more likely to form a varnish, repeated small film deposits or a large volume of fuel ? Especially true I would think of the pre-mixed fuels. Todays fuels are full of additives to extend the "shelf life" and stability of the product. Letting it sit for a couple weeks or even months won't cause any negative side effects. I let my lawnmower sit unused for 7 months every year for more than 15 years and it starts each spring on the second or third pull. Never added any stabilizer or drain the tank, just park it in the fall. I don't add any stabilizer to my outboard in the fall either, just fog the engine really good.

The best thing to do is run some of the premix out of the carb without letting the motor run completely out of fuel (don't starve the engine).

If you have a smaller outboard, take the motor off the boat and turn it upside down , this will drain all of the fuel out of the float bowl.

Randy
