Hey OH, not that it couldn't be possible, but I seriously doubt that this:

is a factory insulation of flotation (or structural rigidity) foam... What a cobbled up mess

J , I dont want to hijack this fellows thread , but please check the link in my signature (88 sylvan) Look at the teardown photo's , I am most certain it was factory , nobody ever touched the boat , I found the holes in the floor where sylvan poured in foam , white plastic stapled over the holes , in the center , pre formed foam blocks were layed in and the floor was riveted over top , it was TIGHT!

I mentioned it before , the fact that without the foam my foot would of went through the floor. After thinking about it I decided to replace the pour foam on the sides and use pink foam in the center , all while keeping a path open for water to go to the rear

yeah my foam looked like that in the center under the fuel tank, but on the sides 90% of it looked almost new until the bottom. My foam is definetly supporting the floor and was also poured in through holes in the floor in some areas. where do I get this pink foam sheet. I may construct something in the center of the boat to leave a path for water to make it's way rearward.

From what I've seen on my two boats, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it left the factory like that. Funny you mentioned "cobbled Up" We've been joking about naming the Islander "cobbled up" due to all the things I'm straightening out between the original owner and the StarCraft factory :)

Carp, all this talk about cobbling, now I want peach cobbler for dinner :D

I know my view isn't the norm on many things, but even if I was just the 'fry guy' at McD's, I'd want to be the best fry guy I could be, because I certainly wouldn't want that to be my forever job..... And it isn't just in menial labor jobs, it's across many social & economic levels.

You'll get this big ole boat whooped back into tip top shape soon enough........

Did you core sample the aft foam before you decided it was dry?

From the way you describe it, I'd say all of the foam in your boat is actually waterlogged and the aft foam just felt dry on top but is saturated below... I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it's more than likely what has happened.

Sure there are a lot of boats out there with waterloffed foam, and those are the ones that sink to the bottom when something goes wrong... like this one:

I strongly suggest you check all of your foam and replace the bad stuff. Check it by core sampling.

jigngrub. Thank you for the boating story. I read it entirely then passed it on to a few other people. It truly shows the respect you MUST have for the water and Mother Nature. When I decid to rebuild my SS I will be sure to replace the foam. 18ft of aluminum sounds much better than 2sq ft of a Coleman cooler. Going to get that ship to shore mounted this weekend as well.
