Hello this is my first time to this. I have a Aq200C with a volvo 280 > When I make turns it makes a grinding noise and shutters. I pulled the gear box and changed the ujoints, but when i took it back out same problem. I am thinging it is the PDS shaft bearings. My question is do i have to pull the motor to change the bearings or can i do it from the aft end of boat. Help please if you can. Thanks

Yes, you have to pull the engine to replace the bearings in the Volvo Penta V8 bell housing.

But don't set your expectations too high, older Aquamatic sterndrives are known for making noise, when turning. This is due the coarse splines on the PDS. Newer outdrives have fine splines on the PDS, this reduces the noise.

Did you notice any movement in the drive shaft when you had the upper off? any play in the shaft is also a good sign that the bearings are bad. Been there...

so i disconnected everything from the motor and hooked to a hoist but could not pull motor. Is there a trick to getting motor to come foward? I could not get it to come foward so i could lift it up.

The motor is bolted at the two side mounts and at the outdrive assembly. How are you disconnected at the flywheel housing?

Did you remove the upper, remove the six bolts, and remove the collar from the transom shield?

I removed the 4 lag bolts at the front of the motor and i removed the 6 bolts that hold the mounting collar. Do i have two remove the mounting collar from the aft of the boat if so how i could not get it to move. Am i missing something

are there mounting bolts on the aft of the motor? I did not see any I think i am being held by mounting collar not sure how to remove collar

The collar is behind the upper gear assembly, around the pds. Its got six bolts held in place by tabs bent against them. Remove the bolts. Once the Bolts are out, using one of the bolts, thread it into one of the unused threaded holes in the collar the jack the collar off the transom shield.

Once the collar is off, it should be loose from the transom shield.

im not sure i follow I put the bolt in one of the unused holes, then jack the collar off the transom sheild? I have the 6 bolts out and understand using one of the unused holes but not sure about the rest

yes. turn the screw in and the collar will come off.

no it has not been taken off in 30 years I am afraid i will break the bolt when jacking out any sugestions

i am using three bolts in holes that are not used, i am turning each screw in order and have come to the point will they will not turn in any more with out extreme pressure and the collar has not moved at all

Sounds like you need a bigger hammer...,I don't know what to say. go around and hit the collar with something to try to jar it loose, while the pressure is on the bolts. Post a pic if you can.

Maybe someone else has had this problem.

everything is disconnected and i just busted a bolt trying to jack out the collar do i need to take the pressure off the motor about ready to give up

6 bolts on the bell housing and 2 motor mounts.
I just replaced my motor.
I actually had to unbolt the motor mounts from the motor.
When I let the motor drop about 2 inches my motor came lose and slipped right out.
It was bound up some how. I'm not sure but i spent a whole day trying to get it uncoupled from the drive before I finally let it down.

so you completly took off the motor mounts and that allowed the motor to drop down and come out?

yep.
Completely unhooked from the engine.
Could not get them off the center bolt but they were plenty loose and I was able to move them around and relieve the pressure.
I let the engine down slowly.It was on a chain block.
It was just bound up a little.
Came very easy once I relieved the pressure.

hey guys thanks for your advise. I went home last night removed the motor mounts from the engine lowered it down and she came right out, now on to fixing the bearings. Thanks again
