Sorry to spoil the party, mission impossible to double the speed achieved with the Kota, due to having a flat bottom, no keel, thin tubes inflated to less overall pressure and worst of all having a non rigid transom, just a simple floating engine mount. Mix these 4 tech issues, fully throttle engine and stern will surely flex along engine downwards losing top prop trust. It's the nature of that type of beast.
Had a Sevylor K-86 same type as the Mariner 4, installed a Merc 2.5 HP, although the sib was inflated to near seam burst and engine mount was modified to stand still the combo performed awfull at wot, too much flexing at sib's rear including engine mount and engine along. Better flat displacement with less flexing was achieved at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, will need to experiment for yourself which throttle range is best for your current set up. Post results for the record.
