okay guys cant figure this one out. 2hp johnson 197? its green i think its a 77. Motor was given to me not running. i cleaned fuel tank and screen. new line. carb cleaned. adjusting screws are where they should be. it has very good spark. motor starts and functions fine. then after 5-15 min of runtime it will just die. check spark again. still have spark. fuel supply is good. will restart immedietly at wide open throttle. but it is not flooding. if anything its either getting starved for fuel or spark. Bad coil or?? thoughts on this?

Does it have the little screw on top the Filler?
You need to open that so the gas will flow.

If it suddenly drops dead I 'dlook carefully at the ignition system but you say you have a spark so it's probably OK

If it dies more slowly I'd look at the carb and fuel system. You say you have a good fuel flow to the carb so not that.

It runs OK for around 10 minutes so not likely to be dirt in the carb and you have been able to correctly set the mixture adjustments.

Perhaps the float or the needle valve is sticking .

If the needle valve is a soft tip one then I think you will find that there should be a tiny spring clip linking it to the float so that when the float drops it pulls the needle off its seat. Check the clip.
See the carb diagram in the parts list at BRP -- Parts Catalogs

BTW you can get the year from the model number if you look at http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf

Did you replace the impeller? Is it possible it is overheating and thus stopping?

Re: 2HP johnson Stalls....

I think mine is a '78.. On mine, the vent screw will vibrate its way closed and then engine dies fairly suddenly as vacuum develops in the tank. On mine, the fix is to just unscrew the vent all the way up to where it has enough friction to stay open... the vent screw doesn't come completely out of the cap. ... any chance that's what's happening to yours? As gayle23 says, an impeller change probably isn't a bad idea anyway. After I changed mine (which appeared to be working OK before), I found the new impeller pumped lots more water. Also, pickup a couple spare drive pins in case you whack the prop on something. Zip tie them somewhere to the underside of the engine.

good luck

its for sure venting properly. put an inline spark tester on it and i have inconsistent spark. very hot to weak. new coil and plug solved that problem but its still runs and stalls the same. starts up runs for 5 min then dies like its getting its legs pulled out from underneath it. go to restart and dies immediatly. pull plug and its very rich. wait for a min. restart runs rich for 30 seconds. clears up and runs fine for five min then dies. impeller is good and is spraying water. im running it in a 45 gallon drum with the prop on. is it loading up fom working too hard?

Take the carb off and pull the core plug on the side of the carb. The holes in there are clogged up. Use a punch with a smooth flat face to seat the new plug. The old one gets drilled and pryed out. T

Use the exact spark plug specified...no cross referenced plugs. The plug is important. I have two of this motor i rebuilt

For a 2hp 1971 to 1990 the recommended plug is now Champion RJ6C gapped at 0.030"

I wonder if that Carb Float has a leak and is filling up with Gas, flooding the motor?

Re: 2HP johnson Stalls....

on this motor the water pick-up tube has a rubber grommet that it slides into on the impeller housing. the grommet has two "ears" when I replaced that I got a lot more water pumping. My 70 2 hp seahorse also intermittently raced when i had the wrong plugs. on a side note you can install a nova 11 electronic ignition module for 12 dollars. No points, condensor, wick, cam--just a small piece of metal the size of a half matchbook. it takes five minutes to install and you get fast starts, a strong low idle and higher top end. I have a 71 mate 2hp with this and it is a screamer and very reliable.

Good one Tom. I had one of those on a B&S lawn mower. Perfect every time!
