Last week one brake light on the trailer was acting weird. The brake light would be ON, on the drivers side, even though the brake pedal was not pushed. The headlights were on at the time. After checking the wires, the bulbs were removed and inspected. The bulb is the classic 1157. On the drivers side, the running light filament had broke and was touching the brake filiment, completing the circuit and making the brake filiment light up.

This is the second time there has been a light bulb filiment failure that caused weird light behavior. The time before, both the brake and running light filiments broke, but the crossed each other without touching, and made connection to the other's ground. Completely reversed the light.

These are Sylvania 1157 bulbs made in China. Going to get another brand, hopefully made domestically.

Re: 2nd weird brake light failure.

Are the tail lights mounted on sturdy brackets. If the lights vibrate it is very possible for the filaments to break and cause the issue you are experiencing.
