Re: 2WD + Limited Slip Differential Enough for Pulling?

When towing anything over 3000 lbs., there's just no substitute for a full size pickup truck. I towed my 24' Starcraft pontoon boat 350 miles with a Ranger 4 cylinder automatic, and it was quite a handful.

A tow vehicle doesn't just need to pull the load at normal acceleration levels. It must also handle turns at highway speeds and especially have adequate braking capabilities. (Most smaller pleasure boats don't have trailer brakes.)

Pontoon boats (and many other boats) are relatively long loads, but not especially heavy. Wind resistance is absolutely awful on a pontoon. Any boat/trailer can sway badly--requiring a very heavy tow vehicle, like a 1/2 ton pickup truck or larger for stability.

I switched over to a Ford F250 Lariat Crew Cab 2 wheel drive pickup a few years ago, and it's spec'd out for up to 13,500 lb. trailers/fifth wheels. I see 20 mpg unloaded and 15 mpg pulling a boat. With an 80 hp econo ECU flash and 700+ ft. lbs. of torque, my truck runs from 60 mph to 80 mph in 4 seconds flat.

The new 3/4 ton-heavy duty trucks if purchased in gas version are close in price to their 1/2 ton brothers. With the cost of diesels @ $7800 extra and diesel fuel $.69 more, a 6 litre gas 3/4 ton truck is far less expensive to purchase and run (than a diesel)--and will realistically pull up to 10,000 lbs. load.

But, there's nothing wrong with a V-8 1/2 ton two wheel drive pickup, new or old, to pull your boats with. It will do the job for most boaters.

Find a trash or garbage transfer station.
They will weigh your trailer alone. Then come back with a FULLY crammed full boat as it would be on a long vacation trip. Clothes, food, bedding & anything else.
Food , just estimate the weight & add it on as a final tally. I usually have about 80 to 100 lbs. of food. Dressings in glass are a lot of the weight. So is a 24# Turkey.

I was a Virgin tower in 1974. First Hondas brought into New Jersey. 16' Aluminum boat Loaded with EVERYTHING for a 1 week stay on the Saint Lawrence River at Lake Ontario.
Honda could not have been more than 1600# . Boat & trailer with goodies. 1200 to 1400#

What brakes ??
I had the engine screaming during acceleration, cruising, slowing down. Never had a mechanical problem. The boat had a raised hump of gear for 8'.
Being out of work IS DANGEROUS.

Yeah I know of a recycling place that has a scale. I've been meaning to find out who they are and email them. They have a tractor trailer scale that works. I know this because I weigh 200 pounds, with my mountain bike and all my biking gear :D

I think you'll be just fine with a 15ft boat and posi, but as others have said, it's important to keep enough weight on the rear wheels. You should be fine once the boat is fully loaded on the trailer but there is another precaution you should be aware of. When the boat is on the rear of the trailer (loading or unloading) the trailer will tend to tilt up at the front a bit. This will pull up on the hitch and take weight off the back of the vehicle. I've seen it happen before where there is so little weight on the tires that they just slide and the whole rig slowly slides into the water. Chock a rear wheel so that can't happen.:)

Guy

That was me with a 12' moulded Plywood boat from the 50's with a ....30 hp Johnson Seahorse of the same period. Gigantic all white motor of 24 to 30" across. It took 2 of us to put it on the boat. 200 to 300 pounds ??

Slimy concrete. Buddy had to push the boat to get the drive wheels on clean concrete.
