3.0 shift spring guide

On the shifting assembly at the block on the 3.0, there is a spring guide on the shift cable from the control box. Do I need to have that or will I be fine without? It's pretty hard to shift it when it's in place.

will work even better without it it usually causes the inner plastic tube to wear prematurely causing stiff shifting from the core binding.
