OK, so I just ordered a new balancer for my 1987 3.0l motor, the old one came apart.

I am a long time car and motorcycle guy and I have a pretty good clue about boats as well.
Thing is, the balancer on this motor is pressed on, with no bolt. I can't see if the tapered hole in the crank snout is drilled and threaded or not.
My first instinct is to drill and tap the hole and use my balancer installation tool. I know this will not throw off the balance of the crank, but can anyone think of any reason not to do this, or a better way to install the balancer?
I do know enough to not hammer it on. I like my thrust bearings thank you.

Thanks for any help.

Re: 3.0l 4 cyl harmonic balancer

what u gotta do is heat the balancer and freeze the crankshaft. take the balancer and boil it in water or oil for a little while....not too hot though just at a low boil. then you take a can of r134a refrigerant and buy the cheapest hose that connects to the top of the can and cut the fitting on that connects to the car. now what you gotta do is heat up the balancer and while its heating up take the can of 134a and open the can up and shoot the freeon all over the end of the crankshaft untill it emptys out...hold can upside down and make sure you are waring thermal gloves cause the can gets really cold and you will need them for the balancer too. then take the hot balancer and put it on the shaft. if you do it quick enough it will slide in as easy as an asian sticking his pp in a old hookers poon...if you can get a friend to assist you it will be a big help in making things go smoothly.

hope this helps cause thats how i did it with no problems

Very good idea. I have done with with rear end ring gears. I never considered this for a balancer.

Thanks!
