Re: 3.0L with Alpha One drive question

There was oil in the top unit, I was a little low, but it was there. I haven't seperated the unit yet. With the unit all together should I be able to turn the drive shaft freely?

Re: 3.0L with Alpha One drive question

Well my bearing retainer nut wrench finally arrived and I was able to pull the nut off fairly easily. Anyone know of any tricks to pulling the U-Joint yoke, bearing and gear out of the upper unit? I was out of time but I tried a few good pulls and it wouldn't move.

Re: 3.0L with Alpha One drive question

Well I was able to pull the u-joint, yokes, gear and bearing assembly out all together. The bearings seem to be seized. I can not hold the outside of the bearing race and turn anything. It also looks like it spun the race in the housing. The bits of plastic I found in the upper unit seems to be from the lock nut that hold the gear on. Any ideas on how to get the bearing assembly off the yoke?

You probably want to replace the yoke when you replace the bearings. Checkout this website. AfterMarket Discount. I just replaced the lower gears and bearings in my lower unit and the yoke and u-joints in my upper. I only used the boat once since I did all this work the put it away for the season. Good luck.

Re: 3.0L with Alpha One drive question

Well I finally got a chance to put the outdrive back together and back on the boat. Now here is my problem... I can move the shifter (forward, neutral, Reverse) but it does not shift the gears. I am always in forward. I have the shifter from the lower unit aligned properly and seated in correctly. Any ideas? I am thinking that it must have something to do with the cable and roller.

Was the drive in forward when you installed it?
Just curious, what did you do to repair it?

Re: 3.0L with Alpha One drive question

Both drive and control were in forward.

The original problem was the bearing set in the upper unit. I purchased a complete upper unit rebuild kit which included all bearings, gears, seals, and u-joints for about $400. A lot less then the $1500 my local marine shop wanted to do the rebuild.

Do you think my new problem could be caused by that cable with the roller not being properly aligned?

I'm not sure about your shifter problem, it sounds like it might not be engaged properly at the linkage. I would caution you that it sounds like you might be in for some false savings if you aren't careful. Bondo mentioned sending it to a shop - If all the gears aren't shimmed perfectly you've just wasted $400, not saved $1100. I just finished shimming a Volvo leg and it's a long process, and very precise. You can't just throw in a new gearset and drive away. Well, I guess you can drive away, but you won't drive back. From your posts it sounds like you don't have a manual and you might not realise just how important it is that the backlash is set perfectly. You can't do it properly without Merc's tools, either.

Sorry for the delay, I have been traveling for work. The project is complete and everything is working fine. The shift issue I had was caused byt the fact the the roller had slipped out of the fork in the cable assembly when I put the outdrive back on. Simple fix.

I appreciate everyones input and cooments.

Unless You Shimmed these New Gears,+ Bearings Properly........

I see Another Outdrive Rebuild in your Future.....
(And Not the Distant Future)
(Reread airman's post)
