3.7L Merc - New answer to an old problem?

I just bought this used boat and I'm having the same problem with the coolant pump seals that many other members have posted threads about. I can't get it to stop coming out the weep hole. I did the speedi sleeve thing, etc, etc. Has anyone ever modifed the timing chain cover to allow an external pump to be used by tying into the existing suction hose and discharge? The suction would be easy, the discharge would require modifying the cover, but I have access to a MIG/TIG aluminum welder and a machine shop. This would bypass the whole stinkin' mess. The timing chain cover would become just a fancy oil splash guard, no need to seal anything. I know it's radical, but I'm desperate.
Thanks.

I am sorry to say, your idea sounds like a real can of worms. Check over at breezeworks, they have many posts on the subject, some with pics. Its possible to put the seals on backwards. Good luck

Thanks, I did not know about breezeworks.net, looks like plenty of info. I'm going to try the seals one more time. BTW, which worms worry you the most?
Thanks,
Mark
