i have an old 3 gallon gas can. Are there any issues to using the old metal gas can in your boat? Safety issues?
Thanks

Welcome to iboats.

As long as the tank is not leaking and the inside is clean, no problem whatever. It might be a good idea to add an in-line filter.

be aware that the move to plastic tanks is because the metal tanks can generate at spark if scooted across carpet

I have never heard that before. But okay I'll state there is an extremely remote possibility...maybe. :noidea: However, the only way a metal gas tank could even possibly start a fire via a spark, is if there were gas spilled out side the fuel system for any spark to catch a fire. Other wise I can't see any possibility. But then you do have static electricity with plastics as well. So not sure swapping from metal to plastic would be a great reason. Again :noidea: But I will take your word as well. JMHO

1 in 100,000,000 chance. You have a much greater chance of dropping that 3 gallon tank on your toe which would hurt.

that is what i was told years ago, i know i am showing my age but i remember when the plastic tanks came out and its more likely due to rust in the tanks as much as any thing else, i had a uncle who got burnt bad when my grand dads cabin cruiser blew up and our only guess was static that set it off when it was being fueled

Plastic is even worse for generating static than metal. No matter what tanks are made of or if tanks are portable or permanent, you need to use care when filling.
