I have a 14 foot boat which due to a minor accident capsized in the sea taking the outboard with it.

The engine (model 30AM) spent about 20 minutes under the sea water and was recovered.

I washed with thoroughly with fresh water, turned it over with no plugs in it, filled the bores with WD40 and pulled it over (I did this about 10 times). I removed the excess water by using WD40 all over the electrics etc...

I flushed out the carbs with WD40 and cleaned the fuel lines and filter out.

With fresh fuel, incredibly, it coughed, spluttered and came to life again!

Now the problem - ever since it happened the engine runs rough, dies when idling and won't idle in gear for more than a few seconds. At high engine speeds it seems to run well but at low speeds it mis-fires coughs out smoke and runs badly often dying and very hard to re-start.

I've cleaned the carb out very thoroughly again with carb-cleaner including the jets, put new spark plugs in it, checked all the wiring, checked the fuel pump diaphragm... I can't get the fly-wheel off but I don't think it uses contact-breakers anyway.

Any ideas what else I might check? I am at a loss to think what else to try. Before its little swim the engine was smooth and sweet giving no problems at all.

Thanks

All it takes is one little grain of dirt to mess up a carb. I suggest you completely dissassemble the carb(s) and completley clean them in a carb dip and then spray real good with compressed air. I would also do the same with the fuel pump, and then replace all rubbers in both.
