Has anyone else needed to replace the 3000 style control box that was used on their boat? I thought that I had a broken shifter cable and I was told that the problem is a defective control box. I was also told that it cannot be repaired and that they were discontinued due to problems in design and that I would need a new one. Can they be repaired at all? I know that there was a recall, but I bought my boat used and do not think that I can take advantage of the recall. Anyone? Thanks.

Go to this link and download the 25MB file and once you have it on your computer, you will find the Commander 3000 series starting at Section 4G.

http://www.4shared.com/document/Gsz8M-KN/Merc_Controls_Newest_manual.html

Once you identify which one you have, we can get you the parts listing.

As well, Have you disconnected the shift cable at the engine to see if the cable still operates correctly when the selector is moved?

Re: 3000 style Control Box on Mercury Motor

I won't go through the life's history of my current boat, but the 3000 failed prematurely in my opinion. Ok-fine as the black button you use to get fast idle and that whole system in that control really sucks in my opinion.

I found several sites with new late designed 2000 controls (including iboats and may have bought it from here...don't remember) for around $200 to $250 depending upon what it has in it, like PT lever on the control handle, whether or not it was used with varying engine designs with varying features and such. You just order the particular 2000 that fits your engine functionality, otherwise universal matching to Merc engine throttle and shifter interfaces. It was designed to operate the same control cables and electrical plug into the respective engine just as the 3000 did.

The difference is that the 3000 mounts in the bulkhead and the 2000 mounts on it. Cable/wiring harness on the 3000 is behind the bulkhead (out of sight if that matters) and the 2000 cable and wiring is outside, in plain sight.

Getting the 3000 off the boat was impossible till I got out my reciprocal saw with a metal cutting blade and cut the controller hub off the control to get to the 3 mounting screw heads...it had corroded on there, on a boat 10 years old never used in salt water, and constantly covered or garaged.

The exposed cabling doesn't bother me in the least and the control is a dream. I especially like the exposed fast idle lever as my Merc is cold natured and getting it going the first thing on an outing takes time requiring easy access to the fast idle and the fuel enrichment which is just depressing the key in the On/Start positions just like on the 3000.

Only thing left is to ensure that the new control moves your throttle and shifter correctly. You may have to adjust the barrel at the engine to get the movement to suit the engine.

You added this while I was typing my "dissertation". On replacing parts to fix the 3000, the first thing I would do, before buying any repair parts, is to see if you can loosen the handle retaining hex allen set screw and remove the handle. If it is frozen as mine was you are buying parts for something you can't fix.

I appreciate the input. I ended up going with a new control box. I'll post what series or model that is being put on. I'm going to have my recently retired father take a look at the old control box. Definitely something in the control box as the cable moves back and forth just not when trying to use the selector.

Anyone know if I can still take advantage of the recall on this, or has it been too long since recall notice? Thanks.

Forget it. That thing has been sold since the beginning of time.....well sorta. 30 years at least.
