I recently bought a mariner 30 hp outboard Code 689 serial #418032. I have so many questions about this motor. I can't find any information on the year of the engine. Using the info on the web that gives serial# ranges for engine size and type to determine the year I haven't found one where this falls. Also the engine claims to be oil injected ( I've determined that's what the O stands for) and it also has oil injected printed on the motor cover. However when I opened it up their is no oil reservoir or place to fill oil.

I'm not sure the technical terms for what is wrong with the motor but I will explain it the best I can. I pulled the lower unit off and pulled the shaft out. That all appears to be in working order and the splines on the shaft look good.

I'm not sure what the part is called but up near the bottom of the engine where the shaft "plugs" into that "gear" appears to be stripped. I was wondering what that part is called and roughly how much it costs or if it's even possible to find.

I bought the motor for $50 and another $50 for a tank and hose. I got the motor to run but I didn't want to keep it going for more than a minute without mixing the gas because it doesn't appear to be oil injected. I wouldn't mind putting a little bit more money into it if it's going to be worth it in the long run.

Thanks for any help!

My 1982 is 689 407 533, so I'd guess yours is in the mid to late 1980's. There are some posts on here that give a link to a site that will tell you the exact year - or, usually some helpful guy jumps in and provides the info.

Mine didn't have oil injection. My understanding is that a lot of motors had the oil injection removed because of reliability issues. I'd suggest you don't run it again without a 50:1 gas/oil fuel mix. Even if there is oil injection somewhere on the motor, it won't hurt - whereas running it with out oil definitely will hurt.

Mine is a 30 HP
Hum, I can see where the serial number chart says yours is a 1982. I don't want to confuse you about this but in case you're interested, the model number that comes up under your serial number is 7030520 which would make it a 1980. If interested, you could search the model number online for a parts catalog (and year) that would match this parts catalog 689-401216 THRU 411946.
