when i go from neutral into gear, the motor dies. if i click the choke button on the dash periodically, it will keep the motor running momentarily at low speed. when i get it up to higher speed (clicking the choke button as the speed increases), it will run on its own until i reduce speed again. i adjusted the valve on carb in the yard with water muffler on, and had it running good. thought it was fixed. got it on the lake and same problem all over. any suggestions? feel free to contact me at billwh87@aol.com.
Mariner 30AE
689 402459
90-84681 1

Sounds like dirty carbs, too lean low speed..FIX IT! This will damage the engine in the long run.

You can't adjust the carb(s) in the yard on muffs. If you do not have the back pressure from the water and the weight of the boat you will always end up off the mark.

I tried the same on my 1977 Mercury 20hp and would get it great at home and it would be less than desirable on the water. I tried it at the lake one day in a fit of desperation and it made all the difference. I was almost a full turn off from where I needed to be.
