I have a 35 HP Evinrude, I need some help with the year and a maintenance issue. I've done autos and aircraft, but never 2 cycle outboards.

Identification: I think that it is early 1980s there is no outside tag, but a plate on the power head with :135RCCSM, 10002164 Can any of this translate to the year?

Compression is 125 psi on both cylinders, and it starts on first or second pull. The problem is that I put it in a barrel of water and got black oil everwhere. The oil smells like exhaust. I found oil weeping out of a small hole near the foot. Can anyone tell me what is going on? It looks and smeels like gear oil with exhaust. Thank you.

Re: 35 Evinrude help please

CS are the date letters for 1980.

But you must have mis-read or mis-typed the first bit

Should just be E35RCCSM perhaps

E for Evinrude (J for Johnson), 35 for 35 hp

R for ropestart, Not sure about the first C though

Black oil draining from there is prob just partly burnt oil from the fuel and is normal but if you think it is mixed with some gear oil check your gear case for signs of water ingress. Milky appearance = water.

Re: 35 Evinrude help please

The pictures depict a 35hp Evinrude, however that model number of 135RCCSM identifies a 135hp Evinrude.

Assuming that the "1" was a typo, the model number of 35RCCSM identifies the engine as a 1988 35hp Evinrude.

Compare the gearcase lube with what you're speaking of. Drain a small amount of gearcase lube for inspection. If the lube still looks like oil and is not pitch black, in all likelyhood the gearcase is not leaking. Check that by filling the gearcase from the bottom drain hole until it flows out of the top oil level hole. If no water exists in the gearcase, the oil looks like proper gearcase oil, and it doesn't take much to fill it...... I'd asssume that the gearcase is okay.

Drain screw is a large regular slotted screwdriver screw in the skeg. The oil level screw is identical, located somewhat higher up the gearcase.

Normally that black substance you speak of is simply the excess unburnt mixture flowing down the internal black soot coated exhaust housing.

That small hole is simply one of the water drain holes, designed to keep the lower unit from cracking in areas that have freezing weather.

Thanks all.

I'll change and inspect the gear oil. What gear oil do I use 75W-90?

The oil leaking out could be gas oil mixture and getting dirty in the exhaust port. However, it it thick.

Vic...... Been wondering about that "CCS" myself. Alarm is on right now but if I think of it tomorrow, I'll check the books and report back.

AKRifle..... Check that model number and let us know if there's also a typo in that RCCS area. Gearlube is whjat is called "HiVis 80/90w", available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, Dealerships, Sierra, Marine Stores, etc.

I own Model # E40ELCCS, Ser #1726363, I believe the last letter to be a production run series identification.

Re: 35 Evinrude help please

EN2 Yes you are right. The last letter is a production suffix that we ignore . CC are the year letters of yours and that makes it a 1988 model.

(E= electric start and L= long shaft.)

Trouble with akrifle's is that we have more letters than we can allocate a meaning to.

I think prob RC means rope-start + something else, then CS = 1980. M is the production suffix. He is expecting it to be early '80s rather than late 80s.

Maybe the coloring tells us which.

Joe will figure it out.

Re: 35 Evinrude help please

Vic..... In checking my books, I find the 1980 35hp Evinrude model number to be:

E35RLCSM with the ending "M" simply being the factory run number.

Apparently "akrifle" entered a "1" for some reason before the model number and a "C" in place of the "L".

So, as you stated, the year would be 1980, not 1988 as I originally inserted.

Re: 35 Evinrude help please

Thaks for clarifying that.
I never thought about him misreading an L as a C but I did realise that the 1 was a mistake..

Not uncommon for people to misread the numbers. I usually suggest a magnifier when there is a problem over the ID.

Re: 35 Evinrude help please

I must have read the "L" as a "1", didn't have reading glasses on and asked the neighboor to help me read the numbers. This all makes sense because the previous owner told me that he thought that he bought it in 1981 or 1982.

Without buying Amsoil or some really high priced stuff, what is a good, low-smoke, low-dirty exhaust 50 to- 1 oil to buy?

Pic is red salmon in Alaska, two weeks ago.
