351 getting hot

I have a 351 in a '76 sea ray 240, just bought the boat as a small project. It runs good but starts to get hot if i idle to long or if I run at 2800 -3000 rpm. If i run the boat at 1800-2000 rpm it stays fairly cool. It has the yellow green red gauge so I'm not sure what temp but when I say hot I meen the very edge of red. I have done a full lower unit service, the old impeller looked great. I installed a new thermostat and found there wasn't one. i took the risers off they looked rusty so I soked them in an electrolisis bath for 24 hours each and pulled lots of rust out of them after it was done I flushed them with a hose and they seemed to flow well. I pulled the hose from the t-stat housing and it's getting more flow than a garden hose. My next guess is the circ pump. It's raw water cooled fresh water boat. most of my test are with my boat lift half way down.

Re: 351 getting hot

Chuck, I have the identical cooling system on my 302. I was having a similar problem last year. I found the base for the impeller was slightly warped. After doing a full impeller/housing kit, it now cools as it should. I would also backflush the cooling system in case any previous impeller pieces may be plugging things somewhere.

Usually, when the circ pump fails, it is either a noisy bearing or bad seal that drips. The cooling sys on these engines works well when in top shape, but I think it is a bit finicky.

I did install a new housing with the impeller (the only way to go) , I think I'm going to pull the circ pump and see if someone installed an automotive unit, maybe the fins are coroded. I'm not convinced it is the circ pump it's just that I have replaced everything else. If i don't find the problem there I have an alpha one lower I will slap on it. thanks

Re: 351 getting hot

I would love to hear anybody's thoughts, dose anyone know the flow spec for the for the lower unit pump? I'm thinking about puting a tee inline to see if dumping of SOME of the water going to the risers will help = pluged riser or flaper.

Re: 351 getting hot

I removed the cir pump and it looked ok not great but but no real corosion or damage. I pulled the plates off the end of the manifolds and they look relativly new. I guess I'm going to go through the whole clear hose thing. I also checked a plug and the engine isn't lean. Dose anyone know the specs for pressure on a 233? I only have one trailer so swaping drives between boats is a real pain. Any specs anyone could give me would be great. thanks for any help.
