I change batteries and did not do anything but that, now when I hook up the battery it is grounding out on something I fallow all the wires and they look ok don't understand why it would be grounding out, Please help, ( all the accessories are on a different battery ) could this be the starter or a relay switch grounding out . ??

:welcome: aboard talman...

Any time you connect a battery and the wires get hot or are sparking badly, yes you have something that is not normal indeed. I would look at the starter solenoid for starters. But depending on the ignition type, it could be the ignition as well. It easily could be a shorted out rectifier/regulator and is shorting the battery to ground. You also need to post the year of the engine so we can help figure out what could be involved... JMHO!

Okay talman, seems your engine is a 1988 HO357F88B 35HP Force engine. And you do have both a stator and rectifier and two spark coils as well. So there easily could be a fried rectifier shorting out the battery. So I would remove the starter wire from the battery first and see if the short is still there. If not, then your starter solenoid is the problem. But if you still have a short, then remove the wire from the rectifier next and see if the short goes away. If so, then you have a fried rectifier... Post back here with your results. I attached the ignition system break down so you can see where everything goes... Hope this helps some. JMHO!

Obsolete parts are just parts that are not made anymore. But that doesn't mean you can find NOS somewhere. Check out EBay and see if you can locate a new one or used. And if you can't, you could always use a different part that can function the same way. The only problem doing that is you have to fit it some place else because it probably would not fit in the original place. But the engine would run again...

#35 is a circuit breaker. Google "Mercury 88-F510460", all over the place for about 15 bucks. You may have to click on more than one of the search results to find it.
