Hello all,
I am stuck trying to remove the lower unit for a water pump replacement.

The serial number is A184476 I believe it is 1984 or 85.

I have removed (or loosened the 4 lower bolts including the one inside the trim tab.
The manual says, "Remove the shift lever coupler located in the bottom cowling behind the carburator."
Huh? What is the "shift lever coupler? Do I have to remove the carb to get at this? I don't see what they are talking about when I look at the motor.

I have created a small gap between the lower unit and the rest of the engine using wood shims and a small amount of violence. Was this wrong? Or is more violence needed?

Thanks for any help you all can be,
Brent

The manual says, "Remove the shift lever coupler located in the bottom cowling behind the carburator."

That is what you need to do. There is a rod that goes down to the lower unit that shifts the gears between foward, neutral and reverse. That rod has to be unfastened. It may be hard to see, my 25 HP Merc has a little clip on a slider that has to be undone. Can be a real project to hook it back up, as it is very close quarters in there. Patience is a virtue here.

If you don't have a manual, go to Crowley Marines website and do a parts look up to see the diagram.

Mr. Florida is right. I had to remove the starter off my 25hp to better access but it's right under the carb. Check that diagram to know what you're looking for. It took me awhile to locate so i hope that helps.

If you want to give your email add, i had taken some photos when i was working on my 25HP carb. One of the photos i have shows this pin that needs to be disconnected. Its a big file 2meg (camera was set up this way for detail) so its over the limit for me to attatch it here. I would be glad to email this photo to you and try to explain how its removed. This was my first time and took it apart to much so i learned some things when i put it back together. Just read the guidelines they discourage putting personal info such as email adds in the forum. I think there is a way you could send a private msg to me if you choose to.
