Hello
I'm working on a 3hp Johnson from the 53-54 age group.
I got this motor from a friend that the first day he got it we were out on the lake and it stopped and wouldn't turn over Locked up tight. We thought it locked up for good.
Well it sat in his shed for about 3 years and we were cleaning up around his yard hauling away scrap and such well he started to add it to the pile on his trailer.

Well I grabbed it! I let is sit another 2 years before I even did anything to it. Later found out one of the coils was hitting the flywheel was all.

Then sat for awhile again.
Figure I might as well get this thing running not that I need it, just that things should be able to run in case you do.

Well after dealing with a no spark issue in one cylinder and filed points and cut the plug wires back on both ends 1/4" then the other side started to do the same thing. Thank goodness everything was still loose. Well its now has good spark.

But the other problem was when I put gas in it it just poured out the carb.

So take the carb apart the float is the ugliest nastiest float I have seen!

Its a jw-10 3hp Johnson
I found a carb kit if the numbers are correct
carb kit# 439071

Can't find the numbers for the float though.
Can anyone help me there?

Last thing I just can't seem to get the fast idle screw to turn soaked it with PB-Blaster a penetrating oil for a couple days.
Its now sitting in carb solution, was going to check it today but didn't get around to it. An extra day won't hurt it anyway!

But does anyone have any suggestions on getting this screw out? Or have a float bowl laying around they just don't need?

Thanks,

Good little motors. Carb kits are available here at iboats. How did the coils look? Were they cracked, or were they in good shape? If they're cracked, you'll want to replace them. I would get a can of chem-dip and soak the carb in it. That will loosen up all the crud.

Yeah surprise the coils look like they are new. No damage of any kind. Yeah I found the carb kit. Just don't know which float to buy can't find the part number and the numbers I have for the float show not available.

Does anyone have the part number for the float I need?
See motor info above.
Thanks,

Yeah its been sitting it chem-dip since Tuesday night and its now friday night probably should go get it out of there but don't feel like smelling like that stuff. Just opening the can you smell like it for a few hours but man oh man don't know of anything that works any better!

Re: 3hp johnson carb problems and need parts

Ok its been a week since I dunked the carb in Chem-dip. Went into the garage and saw the parts to the carb and was like oh yeah.
Well to say I put the vise grips on the high speed shaft. Turned forced forced some more, oh it moved, tried again no my visegrips must of slipped tried to go back forced some more, was at the point either its going to break or turn.
Oh it moved again or did it.... tried back and forth a few more times started to move some more. kept going back and forth only would turn maybe 1/2 a degree but its moving 15 mins of back and fourth little by little it turned more and more. Then finally it came out.

Well to say it did the trick sat there in the chem-dip for a whole week. Now its sitting in it a few more days till I get a chance to go through it and wait for the parts kit and float to get here.

Update when I get running.

THanks all,
