4.3 Dipstick

I'm thinking that my oil dipstick in my 4.3 Merc might not be the original. Haven't had the boat long and checked the oil yesterday and now I can't get the dipstick back in. The dipstick tube has threads that surround the opening and the dipstick itself doesn't have anything to attach to the threads. I'm also worried that if it's the wrong length I could be getting false readings on my oil level. If your sitting in the boat facing the engine, the dipstick tube protrudes on the left side between two coolant hoses. Could someone measure your dipstick and see if mine measures up. No joke intended here. Thanks

Re: 4.3 Dipstick

the dipsticks are long and somtime's are hard to put back in... I find they have only one way they go back in.. so try rotating the dipstick around and push back in.... the threaded collar is normal.. it is meant to be used for a point to screw a oil evacuation drain pump hose in order to pump old oil from crankcase when performing a oil change.... and order a manufactures shop manual for your motor/drive combo its a must have for any boat owner.

You should find a part number on the dipstick. If you post it here some of us with parts manuals can verify it as the right one. Also post the serial number of your engine.

Chris.............

Sure isn't going to do any good for someone to measure there dipstickes, unless you are talking exactly the same engine, Model, Year, carb, extras and all.
The Mercruiser service manusal actually have dimensions of the dip stick, so if you post your engines serial number, I could look it up for you.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll check the serial# and the part number from the dipstick. I have an aftermarket repair manual and I couldn't find any specs on it. Thanks

mbolin,

i have a mpi 4.3 motor. i agree you should check the numbers to positively show if you have the right dipstick. however, i believe the threads you are looking at on the dipstick tube are for hoooking up an oil changing pump. my dipsticks are the original ones and because they are long sometimes you do have to feed them in a little. i would check the numbers to make sure, but this might help put you at ease a little.

Re: 4.3 Dipstick

Ok guys here are the numbers. Engine serial # OC332294, and number from the dipstick 41092-1. BTW, I still have not been able to get the dipstick back in since I took it out on Friday. I'm wondering if the tube may have come loose from the block? I tried to feel my way along the tube but couldn't reach well enough. I may try to get a mirror down there so I can see it. Thanks
