Re: 4.3 Engine knocking, burning ton of oil,

I beg your pardon? Ever had an engine apart? Ever build an engine and leave the second ring out? gotta clue?

No I haven't got a clue you're right. I think you have proven that you are not smart enough to debate this issue. At no time have you proven anything you have said or provided any facts. As in my case I can pretty much open any engine manual or call on any professional engine builder to prove mine.

And no I don't leave the second ring out. We are talking about low performance truck engines here, not experimental high performance engines that last one one or two races...

Oh, so you READ about it and expound?

I'm not trying to get in a pissing contest with an armchair mechanic, just passing along decades of knowledge I've obtained from HANDS-ON experience on cars, trucks, racing engines, and aircraft engines.

As for the second ring issue, we have left the second ring out on a racing engine as an experiment, and found out exactly what that ring contributes. The class we raced in in SCCA, the engines lasted all season, and were, and are, production based.

BTW, I also rebuild carburetors AND recurve distributors with my own distributor machine, so if you want to tell me what your book says about those items, feel free.

I pulled out eveery spark plug and they all look the exact same, they are a bit sooty (black) with just a tiny bit of oil on the threads

They shouldn't look black and sooty unless you've been idling on muffs tinkering around alot and even then really shouldn't load up like that, black and sooty plugs are usually a carburetion issue, figure out and fix what is causing that noise first.

Synergy: If you've gotta buddy or mechanic with one of those neat new color boroscopes, take a peek inside a couple of cylinders. You can look at the cylinder walls (make sure the piston is all the way down) and piston crowns. If the piston tops are "washed", you've gotta serious oil control problem.

Re: 4.3 Engine knocking, burning ton of oil,

The youtube thing is a different engine. Fluffy deposits are usually fuel, but could be oil additives also. Oil on the threads is a significant tell of oil in the combustion chamber.

Gotta buddy just got a color Snap-On boroscope..what a great tool! Time for some serious diagnostics!

Don't rule out a stethescope or even the screwdriver in the ear to try to determine the location of the noise.

Bottom line..excessive oil consumption and serious knocks don't go away on their own. There's no "engine rebuild in a can". Frankly, i'd pull the engine, disassemble it, and go from there.

I can feel where it is coming from. I put my hand on the starboard side valve cover and I can feel it.

Re: 4.3 Engine knocking, burning ton of oil,

Knock implies rod/main bearing which is low down in the engine since it is crankshaft related. A tapping sound implies valve lifters which causes the tapping at the rocker arms. Perhaps one is just misadjusted or worn. Rod know can be identified by pulling one spark plug wire at a time. When you hit the cylinder that is knocking the noise will go away when the plug wire is disconnected. I see two problems with the engine. If the knock is down low, you have a rotating assembly (bearing) issue. Oil consumption is totally different and involves valve seals and rings. Either of these conditions requires removal of the engine for repair/rebuild.
