Shift plate mechanism on engine, Check the drive shift cable, slide thingy in the bell housing, upper shift lever, shift shafts.
Check em all. You did keep it in forward when you re installed it?

Check the position of the shift shoe. Make sure it is engaged correctly. They have a habit of getting out of position.

Sounds like you may have forgotten the stainless steel washer on top of the lower shift shaft. Look and see if the intermediate shift shaft has dropped out of the "shoe."

If it is an Alpha I: If the control moves freely back and forth, WOT F to WOT R then the washer is missing. If the control james when you pull it back, then the gearhousing was in reverse rather than forward when you put it back together and the intermediat shift shaft went onto the lower ss off a spline. Shift to WOT F. Drop the gear housing, rotate the lower ss (short splined shaft) all the way clockwise, rotate the prop counterclockwise till it locks and use a bungee th hold it in place, you are now in forward. Put er back together making sure the bottom of the upper ss and the top of the intermediate ss both point straight forward. Should be good to go.
