So I made the likely poor decision to buy my first boat. I made a 2nd poor decision buying a boat knowing it had a bad motor. 1994 Mariah something or other with the 4.3 Mercruiser that once torn down showed a cracked block under the intake and one of the exhausts was also cracked. I've done quite a bit of mechanic work before and figured that I could change the motor myself Given prices, I could get a used truck motor, gaskets, and a few accessories about 2 or 3 times before I got to the price of a new/rebuilt Mercruiser motor (..might have been wrong there).
I got a V6 from an '06 Silverado because it was cheap and anything closer to my vintage was non-running or likely needed a rebuild. Now the year and interchangeability of the GM 4.3 is what I'm obviously running into, which I was somewhat prepared for. I already got the newer intake, but what else can be swapped over or needs to be updated to newer parts.
Is it just a matter of getting the newer accessories to fit this newer model motor? I'd already got the newer style 4.3 intake. Looks like I will also need the water pump since it does not have the bypass hole. What about the rest of the accessories? Since I did not previously have a serp belt and tensioner I'm guessing to make this new motor work I need the whole alternator, PS pump, brackets, tensioner, balancer, and pullies? I'd love for this not to be true. Is there anyway to run the older accessories on the newer motor? Because if pretty much every accessory has to be updated to the newer version, all I need is some of you guys to tell me "I told you so" and that I should have gotten a motor from the same model year.
If this were you would you:
1. Keep buying motor accessories to make the '06 truck motor compatible (only spent $500 so far, have new motor, intake, gaskets)
2. find an older model to swap everything over to
3. Just give up and spend $1700 for a rebuilt marine motor with warranty
