4.3GL PEFS Temp Question

Now that I have the engine running, I did some maintenance, new plugs, cap and rotor and I also replaced the thermostat since the operating temp never went above 120deg. The guage was replaced last year (a combination tach, temp, trim) and the problem existed before. I went with an original VP thermostat and gasket. Now, the temp guage is still not going over 120. I ran the engine for about 3-4 minutes and checked the water coming out the back and it was fairly hot (could be touched and not get a burn). What's next, a new temperature sender which is on the thermostat housing?? Or something else. The water circulating pump has been changed at some point in the past as well.

Re: 4.3GL PEFS Temp Question

Ive experienced the same with a pefs. Volvo sets them up with a cold thermostat as to why i do not know. Some say lower temps for saltwater but i do not know if that has any credence..Just put in a 160 if you want a warmer engine...that is what i did just a personal prefrence

Not shur why you say that TG, Volvo uses a 160? stat. Here is directly from the OEM manual for the EF.
If you order the OEM stat from Volvo it's 160?

Are you sure the thermostat is up inside the thermostat housing properly? It's also going to take more than 3-4 minutes to warm up.

Re: 4.3GL PEFS Temp Question

Hmm ok well the boat was new i assumed it was factory stuff...i guess someone could have popped in a lower temp thermo for what ever reason..But just as the OP my gauges read 120..popped in a 160 and it now register's 175 on a hot day. Actually it was the tech at the marina he told me it was set up for salt...never heard of such a thing but went along with it..Live and learn i guess.

Re: 4.3GL PEFS Temp Question

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had a chance to splash the boat yet but that should happen in the next 2 weeks. I will report back once it's in the water for a run. The thermostat is nice and snug in it's housing along with the o ring.
