Hi guys, I am trying to do a budget build here and not looking for monster power gains here but trying to swap my V6 for a V8 with minimal problems, biggest reason for the swap is I really like the V8 sound.
My boat is a small 16'3" Starline (similar to checkmate). It has a 4.3L merc and an alpha 1 geared 1.84:1 and currently running an aluminum 19* prop, with the thru hull exhaust. While the 4.3 moves pretty good at around 42-45 mph @ 4400 rpms, I just hate the sound of the V6 wide open. Now I have my chance at getting a 1971 Chevy 307 V8 for cheap, I understand these were low power engines (200hp & 300 ft/lbs tq @ 2400 rpms) Not too far off from the V6 (170hp). I will of course rebuild the V8 and get some exhaust manifolds and possibly risers, along with a nice sounding marine cam, but would there be any reason this would be a bad idea? Would I HAVE to regear the alpha 1?

One thing you forgot to mention that you will need to get is marine heads. Also your boat may not be rated for the extra rate and or horse power...you would also probably have to change and move motor mounts....youd have to do some research to see how much marine heads are for the new motor add that to the cost of it...If your changeing it just for the sound and the current engine is fine it may be more headache than its worth imo....

Just download some V8 noise on yer I-pod to listen to while boating...far cheaper & easier than hackin up a perfectly good Mercruiser package...especially for THAT anchor...

The V8 will probably add a hundred pounds or so to the stern.

Why would the outdrive need regeared if it is only a few hp & tq more? I would think if it was more than 50+ it would be required. If that is the case, than a 350 will go in its place

Why don't you sell your boat instead of carving it up and buy something with a 350 then?

You might want to check the engine closely. Some where in the low 100's HP range. MHO is you are going backwords. The 4.3 is a great engine for a 18' or less boat. You get decent power, lower weight than a V8 and decent fuel economy.

None of that matters, he is after the V-8 sound. Go figure...

really!

The 307 was the dog of the small block Chevys...
And MARINE heads.....no different than stock GM heads....

Agree Bubba,
And adding a V-8 in a 16 footer i bet it would be dragging butt and would actually be slower.....Talk about a waste of money and time..
